2001 Generali Ladies Linz Open<font=size><font=color><font=color><font=size>

The ETA Tour makes its last Tier II stop in the beautiful city of Linz, Austria. The $565,000 event marks the last tournament for players to accumulate points for the season ending Sanex Championships in Munich, Germany. Defending champion, Lindsay Davenport is noticeably absent from the draw, but defending finalist Venus Williams is in the draw and looks to be one of the prime contenders for the indoor title. Venus will look to capture the event that snapped her amazing 35 match win streak.

There are no Austrians in the singles or doubles draw with the changing of nationality of Barbara Schett. It remains in question how the crowd will react to the former No. 1 Austrian. Schett though has experienced a revival in just a few short weeks, reaching back to back quarterfinals but lost in the first round of last week's event.

The four wildcards were awarded to Pam Shriver, Meilen Tu, Su-Wei Hsieh, and Nadia Petrova. The first three wildcards have all reached at least the semifinals or better in their respective tournaments last week. In fact all three made their first ETA semifinals last week. Hsieh and Tu have proven to be a force to be reckoned with. Both players made their debuts last week and are both on track to become the second and third players to win their debut event. Another new face on the tour is Croatia's Iva Majoli who received a wildcard into qualifications.

This week, the small country of Luxembourg plays host to the Tier III Seat Open Luxembourg on a carpet indoor surface. The $170,000 event is the last event for players to secure position in the top 16 for the elite Sanex Championships next week. Both the defending champion, Jennifer Capriait and defending finalist, Magdalena Maleeva are not entered in the event. Though 1999 Champion Kim Clijsters returns to the tournament which earned she earned her first Sanex WTA title.

Other players looking to compete for the indoor title include World No. 3 Justine Henin and World No. 5 Mary Pierce. The top four seeds are Henin, Pierce, Monica Seles, and Petra Mandula. Seles and Mandula will look to clinch spots in the Sanex Championships with a good showing here in the picturesque city of Luxembourg.

Conchita Martinez hopes new coach can get her going again!
Conchita Martinez has hired two time French Open champion Sergi Bruguera as her new coach, heres her interview.

Conchita, why the new coach?

I 've been getting my can kicked indoors, and I have not reached one quarterfinal since I joined the tour.

Does the recent successes of Anke Huber and newcomers Kimiko Date and Su Wei-Hsieh frustrate you?

No.....I mean its good for womens tennis. I expect it from Huber and Date, but its inspiring from someone like Su Wei because I had never heard of her before.

So why Sergei? what do think he can do for you?

Sergei has always been a great fighter who never gives up. I can get down on myself sometimes, but Sergei has been good with improving my outlook on my game....my intensity.

Has he made any severe changes in your game?

No, he just told me to stop trying to outhit these big power hitters, and use my variety, spins and angles to wear them down instead............you know, back to basics.

Ahh! like when you first joined the tour --- so why did you stop in the first place?

When I first came, I had to qualify for everything, by the first round of the tournament I was exhausted because I had already played a few matches. Then I got depressed because I kept losing close matches.

Well I hope it all works out for you Conchita, thanks for the interview!

Thank you, and you're welcome.
