Both Chris Evert and Pam Shriver have been added to the ETA tour. In order not to change the entire draw up, I have placed Evert versus Shriver in the spot against (3) Patty Schnyder. The winner of the Evert vs. Shriver match will meet Schynder.

Unless we find a third player, this is how it will work out. You guys will begin doubles at Tokyo qualies since it would be difficult to mix up the doubles draw now.

FILIPINA ETA PLAYER BACK

Cris Fernandez has returned yesterday to her family and friends in the ETA tour. she was reported missing last saturday, when after her loss to jelena dokic in the bronx classic, she got up and left and did not return to her hotel room. she showed up on sunday, right before her best friend tammy played martina hingis in the US open final. she was emotionally distraught and did not comment that day. in a press conference on monday morning, she explained her actions and apologised for any trouble created.

comments from cris, "it was incredibly stupid and immature of me and to go and leave like that but i feel so much pressure. i feel i have let a lot of people down. my coach, my coutnry, my best friend and partner tammy. i was so down. i went all around the city and stayed in some hotel, where i think i cried for half a day. i woke up the following day thinking, 'now, this is insane. i need to go back.' i am deepy grateful for all the concern that everyone has shown and i am deepy sorry for the trouble that i have caused. i am okay now and am currently seeing a sports psychologist."

fernandez would play in the brasil ladies open this week.

NEWSBRIEF:
in the latest news headlines....

Venus Williams was seen riding on a float especially designed for her in the shape of the Roman Goddess Venus in downtown earlier today.

The American superstar arrived in Brasil yesterday after coming off of a humiliating defeat at the US Open where she lost for the second consecutive week to Anke Huber of Germany. This week at the Brasil Open, Venus will face the tenacious Frenchwoman, Sandrine Testud and in doubles, team Williams/Kournikova clashes with Anke Huber and Chanda Rubin.

Here's what her publicist said, "Venus was very disappointed in her play in both singles and doubles and had to take a few days off to re-energize herself and her soul. She says that hopefully, she and Anna won't underestimate their opponents this week. Again Williams will face Huber for the third consecutive week, but this time in doubles. Venus says she and Anna will take advantage of every opportunity they can get because every point counts. She also had a few words about some of the players.

On Iva Majoli of Croatia, she says that Iva's a very petulant primadonna who always throws tantrums after her losses. Maybe if Iva concentrates on her tennis instead of her pathetic and sophomoric theatrics on the court will she finally win a singles match. Venus also said she's tired of hearing Iva complain about not winning a singles match.

Here's her exact words, 'If Iva wants to retired, let her retired. I mean the tour will survive without Ms. Majoli. She will be doing the tour a favor because the tour doesn't need little girls who can't handle a defeat. I know I'm not the only player who's sick of her immaturish behavior.'

On the young Filipina, Cris Fernandez, Venus says Cris has very good potential to be the best and was worried about her after she was reported missing following her singles loss. Venus wishes Cris nothing but the best.

On Anna Kournikova: Venus says, 'Anna's a very good doubles player and friend. We're both still trying to sort out all the kinks in our play and hopefully, we'll garner a win soon. We don't deserve to play in the qualifying rounds. We're better than that.'"

So there you have it, folks, straight from Venus Williams' people. If you want to catch an early glimpse of the American, she'll be at the Kinko Hotel later tonight with a guest appearance by Anna Kournikova. The mayor is throwing a dinner party in their honor.

And now onto daily news..
