Justine should be 2nd or tied with Venus. Sharapova is not ahead of her by any metric and has a losing head to head with Justine. Justine won 43 titles and Sharapova has 39. Justine won 7 slams and Sharapova won 5. Justine spent 117 weeks at world number one whereas Maria spent 21 weeks there. Justine has a gold medal. Maria has a silver medal. Juju Leads the head to head 7 to 3. Case closed.

That's the lazy kind of list that was to be expected of today's slam counters. Because that's all they are doing. Also, to which century does someone belong whose career is half in 20th century and half in 21st? (Let's say more than half in 21st is counted as 21st)

In my opinion, should be... (That's all by the numbers, not personal preference)

1 Serena Williams
2 Henin
3 Sharapova
4 Venus Williams
5 Clijsters
6 Swiatek
7 Azarenka
8 Mauresmo
9 Wozniacki
10 Capriati

3&4 is within margin of error, as is 8,9&10.

The problem with players like Barty & Osaka is their length of career. Yes, they won slams, but that's not the only thing that should count. Osaka at least still has the opportunity to rise into that list (and I think she will). On a list of peak years they would of course rank a lot higher.

1. Serena
2. Henin
3. Venus
4. Swiatek
5. Sharapova
6. Clijsters
7. Osaka
8. Kerber
9. Barty
10. Kvitova

Henin should be above Dopapova, Clijsters above Swiatek, and Barty above Osaka - but I'd also throw in that it doesn't feel right not to have Kvitova in the top 10, even with less slams than Capriati/not World Number One like Mauresmo.

Kvitova is my favorite female player and better than Kerber imo. Just not as consistent. Kvitova always seems to unnesscessarily go to 3 sets, but when she's on, she'd blast Kerber off the court. Good pick.

Barty. The girl was literally relevant for 2 1/2 of the shittiest years
Surely if you consider these years to be weak, that undermines both Barty and Osaka. Osaka was relevant for a heavily overlapping time period, and far more inconsistently than Barty.

(I'm not a fan of the relevant/irrelevant distinction; I like to think that on TF, we are proper fans and every player ought to be relevant to us, but I more or less mean big title contender in this instance.)

Yes. But apparently actual facts/records don't come into it :tape:

This is part of that 100 greatest athletes since 2000 list which was rightly rubbished.

The tennis lists aren't that bad but obviously Henin should be 2nd or 3rd. Further down you can debate the places but there's no justification for Sharapova above Henin.

The men's list is worse as it has Federer above Djokovic with no attempt to justify it. Roddick over Hewitt and Wawrinka also questionable.
