I know that the entry is unique for both tournaments, the split will be made more or less automatically by WTA.
The point is "when" they will make the split? As soon as the entry is closed, or only at the draw? Reasonably should be the latter, but with WTA we never can tell!

Packed as expected.
Do we know yet the criteria of separation for both fields to turn into Melbourne 1 and Melbourne 2?

It should simply be alternate rankings (e.g. 1, 4, 5, 8 go to Melbourne 1; 2, 3, 6, 7 go to Melbourne 2), but perhaps with tweaks to ensure that doubles partners stay in the same event.

It will be interesting to see how they differentiate these tournaments for media/spectator purposes. I wonder if they would be 'Medibank Melbourne' and 'Apia Melbourne' (just for examples' sake).

With regard to the current "best of" rule these two tournaments will be considered as new or as a replacement of previous ones, like Sydney?

Yeah, they're all being classified as new even though they're using the licenses of other tournaments.

The bottom line is that it gives more players the opportunity to play a warm up tournament, without going thru qualifying, then in previous years. They will have a tournament under their belt before getting to the AO.

They will be called Gippsland Trophy and Yarra Valley Classic
