Originally, in 1993 the ceremony was held in February until 2003 where they rescheduled it to June. Back then, and all the years thereafter, they said they take all the accomplishments from June the year before until June of that year into consideration and couted it as a 'calendar year'.

Nevertheless, a look at the past winners hints that this award is extremly US-biased, what a surprise...

The fact that Henin, Clijsters and Mauresmo never won it basically shows what a joke it is.

What do you mean not based on merit? She cemented herself in tennis history last year by being the first qualifier to ever win a grand slam :lol2: These awards are largely based on 2021 results if I understand correctly
You MIS-Understand...
It is based on the 2nd Half of '21 and the 1st Half of '22.
For example, the Best Team went to the GS Warriors, who won their Title last month.
In any event, the ESPYs are (and always have been) a joke...
That said, Congrats to Emma...

The power of marketing and the PR train on display here. Emma is a great story....100%. Obviously the Cinderella story around Emma trumps accomplishments on the court. As it's a popularity contest by and large....Emma winning is not suprising. Based on tennis accomplishments for 2021.....Barty would have to be picked. For 2022 it would have to be Iga.

Don't get your knickers in a knot folks....hard to beat Emma's story here. As someone already said here.....the Emma thread questioning her relevancy did not age well.

An ESPY Award (short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) is an accolade currently presented by the American broadcast television network ABC, and previously ESPN (as of the 2017 ESPY Awards the latter still airs them in the form of replays), to recognize individual and team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the calendar year preceding a given annual ceremony. The first ESPYs were awarded in 1993. Because of the ceremony's rescheduling prior to the 2002 iteration thereof, awards presented in 2002 were for achievement and performances during the seventeen-plus previous months. As the similarly styled Grammy (for music), Emmy (for television), Academy Award (for film), and Tony (for theater), the ESPYs are hosted by a contemporary celebrity; the style, though, is lighter, more relaxed and self-referential than many other awards shows, with comedic sketches usually included.
From the show's inception to 2004, ESPY Award winners were chosen only through voting by fans. Since 2004, sportswriters, broadcasters, sports executives, and sportspersons, collectively experts; or ESPN personalities also vote. Award winners have been selected thereafter exclusively through online fan balloting conducted from amongst candidates selected by the ESPY Select Nominating Committee.

So according to Wiki, it is given on the basis of the results of the previous calendar year and is chosen by internet voters. If you look at 2021, Emma may have been the biggest story, but Barty deserved much better. And if we look at the period 2021 June - 2022 June, then only Barty or Iga would be considered based on the results. Because the award says "best". Then it should be called the most popular among ESPN voters or somthing like this. But not Best Female Athlete for 2022 because it is a lie So it's all ridiculous.

It does matter where she is relevant. In marketing like Bouchard or on the tennis court. Because on the tennis court she hasn't been for almost a year.

People complaining like it means anything. The entirety is so American and Iga isn’t really known in the US yet so that’s entirely understandable (blame WTA’s piss poor marketing). Emma won US Open, went to Met Gala and appeared on Times Square’s ads which is American way of measuring success.

Anyway, I don’t think any players has even cared about ESPYs in the last 15 years except of course Osaka during her activist phase and Bouchard, who goes often. And sadly Vika during her “I’m American” phase :tape: . Other than Osaka I don’t even think any winner was in attendance, except Serena in early 00s when award shows were still considered prestigious.

It s probably popularity competition, Emma gained 2 million followers on instagram in a few weeks. She peaked at one tournament and that s all, I would compare it to Monica Puig. But Emma didn t face top 10 player at US Open. 😀😀

Emma didn’t face a top ten player at the US Open. But if that’s your argument, Barty didn’t face a top ten player at the Australian Open and Swiatek didn’t face a top ten player at the French Open either.

I mean it's like picking a rabbit out of a hat full of other unknowns. I don't think it means much of anything. Emma is just the flavor of the month. lol
