Mediocre players will always put it higher in importance, since when they play in it it's actually one of the high-points of their careers, unlike premium players like Emma, Murray, Nadal, Djokovic etc. That's not to say premium players don't like playing in it, but when fitness issues arise, their goals are ultimately to get to the top of the sport and that will always take precedence. Which makes sense not just personally for them, but also for their nations. People know when Djokovic wins Wimbledon (and see those Serbian flags flying), not when Serbia wins the Davis Cup. The nation is highlighted through the individual sport more.
you really said this with team GB at the olympics as your profile pic

Comparing Olympics to the BJK Cup is like comparing the FIFA World Cup to the Papa Johns Trophy (with all due respect to the BJK Cup). Not that it's relevant to the perfectly reasonable reasons why she's missing this particular meet-up. She'll be at future BJK Cup ties when the circumstances aren't as they are now.

Be astonished, Andy is skipping as well for same reason - week before clay season he should be focussed on preparation for clay.

Blame the scheduling. BJK in Glasgow Iga skipped and blamed scheduling, at least she has a Bye in stuttgart so an extra day at least.

If schediuled better I am sure they both would play.
Andy is nearly 36 and is protecting his battered body to extend his career by a season or two. He was playing davis cup in his prime and was literally carrying the team for a long while. Only valid reason for raducanu to miss is if her 20yr old body is too fragile. Not knowing when the event is comes across very badly.

Honestly, who watches BJK Cup anyway? I hope they change it like it is only played every 3 years. RN bjk cup has no significance globally. It doesn't even make it to any news outlet really unlike Olympics or Grandslams.

5 of the top10 players have been named to compete in the BJK Q, Sakkari's been named to play in the Europe Group II, the only top10 player that might renounce is Jabeur.

Emma simply didn't want to look like an illiterate while facing Kiki. :p

I kind of see the value of these team comps diminishing now, how can you take them seriously anymore when Trevisan earned 150 ranking points in a AO warm-up beating Sakkari?

The United cup if they are willing to continue to lose pots of gold on it will be the new thing, get in quick beat a couple of ITF players and earn 6 figures along with points.

Why do top football players play in the world cup?

Because it's prestigious and the one tournament is bigger than the WTA season with big sponsorship deals and prize money approaching half a billion.

You would rarely get top basketball playing Fiba world cup and once they get one gold it's just a box to tick.

You can become a legend for world cup performance and it's a factor on the hall of fame resume. You can't tell me beating the likes of Bencic or Pegula at the BJK is going to do much in the record books.

I've seen Hev and Katie B randomly go in to GOAT mode during Fed Cup before, even during times when their form on tour has been atrocious. Lets hope that happens now, because otherwise we really don't stand a chance against France without Emma.:cry::cry:

That's why I specified top players. For them, the prize money of the world cup is pocket change (less than 2 millions per player of the winning team) and they already have rich contracts. They don't play the world cup for money, they play it for the glory.
The BJK Cup is the most important tournament after the GS, especially outside the tennis world. :dunno:

From their perspective that's a good idea — to play extra well during Fed cups, because Fed Cup is a rare opportunity for pros of their calibre to shine and get national attention. That could help them secure (better) sponsorship deals. So it's a good idea for a journeywoman to ignore the weekly WTA points collection routine and (if lucky enough to be invited) play lights-out at Fed cup.

The prize money is still something, even though they are filthy rich they didn't get there by spending money, the rich are some of the tightest people out there. But still the sponsorship deals is where they get really bank, companies will pay them big bucks just for going there tweeting taking selfies, auctioning jersey's to name a few.

Winning a world cup is up there with the biggest prize in the biggest sport in the world. I'm not a big football fan but I watch world cups and to compare it with any form of WTA is a little silly.

Seems strange to compare this to football but you'd never expect them to play a competitive indoor 5 a side match for their club a few days before a world cup.😂

Last year WTA screwed over the ITF now it seems that the ITF is getting payback all to the detriment of the players.

BJK Cup should really rethink its schedule. And they should cooperate closely with WTA. There is enough free time in the calendar year to fit everything.

It's nice this cup exists, but if you make players choose between tournaments with ranking points and a glorified exho... Well...
Well what? If GB has realistic chance to win the hesitation of participating wouldn’t be there. Petra Kvitova or Marketa Vondrousova aint skipping Fedcup/BJKC…
