Hello everyone! 😀 With the 2025 season only a few weeks away, it's time to think about how well Emma will do next year!

Here are the prediction questions for this year for each of you to answer: -
  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season?
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025?
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025?
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open
    • b) French Open
    • c) Wimbledon
    • d) US Open
Put your answers below, plus any justification behind them and any other predictions for Emma's 2025 season. 😀

Also it's interesting to look back at everyone's predictions from twelve months ago. 🧐 The two people who guessed pretty close to Emma's actual year end ranking (57) were me and @zenga10 with guesses of 62 and 65! 😀 Also @Everton10 and @Jonah Leon correctly predicted Emma would make Round 4 of Wimbledon! 🏆

For me I had assumed that Emma would take longer to get into decent form following her wrist and ankle surgeries and I thought she may not return to action until the after the Australian Open. However I assumed she would play more tournaments in the rest of the season, so in terms of the overall success of her 2024 season (year-end ranking etc) my predictions ended up roughly balancing out. 🙂

  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season? 18
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025? 35-14
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025? 2 (1 x 250 and 1 x 500)
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open - 4R
    • b) French Open - 3R
    • c) Wimbledon - SF
    • d) US Open - QF

For the ranking, I've just picked a random number between 15 and 25 because that's where I think she'll finish. This will be based on a couple of tournament wins and reaching a lot more SFs and Fs throughout the year.

I've backed her to play around 50 matches next season, winning just over 70% of them, which is up on the 35 she played in total last year. Had she not gotten injured during the Asian swing in 2024, I believe she would have played around 40-45 matches last year. With improved fitness and a little more luck, she'll play a lot next year.

I back her to win a couple of tournaments next year. Not sure where, but I back her to breakthrough next year.

In addition to her slam performances, I think she'll reach 2/3 1000-level QF/SFs as well.

I can get behind this kind of optimistic forecast

However your W/L maths is slightly off. For Emma to win 33 tournaments she'd have win well over 150 matches.

Thanks @aca99da for another great predictions quiz. Last year seemed more uncertain than 2025 seems at this point, Emma now has a year playing post-surgery under her belt and a fitness coach who will also hopefully help her avoid injury in addition to make her fitter- 🤞

One of your questions last year was when during the year would Emma regain the #1 GB spot and I said she wouldn't do that until 2025. Thinking about that now, I will stay with that- she will take over the #1 GB spot late in 2025, but it will be close. I think Katie will do even better than she did in 2024 as she is also determined to improve and put in the work. I think they will finish very close in the rankings. (I think Katie will finish #20).
Based on no injuries knocking her out of several tournaments, I think Emma will aim for 18 tournaments but miss one. So, playing about 17 tournaments, I think she will again focus on W and USO as her top two, and being optimistic that things work out well with Nakamura:
  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season? 17
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025? 37-16
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025? 1
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open R3
    • b) French Open R3
    • c) Wimbledon QF
    • d) US Open R4
Go Emma Go

Probably not very sensible but I can't help moving rapidly between being extremely optimistic or extremely pessimistic when it comes to Emma, with very little in between, so I will make two predictions. Next year will either be a great success or it will be another injury plagued mess:
  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season? 4 / 123
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025? 57-15 / 10-12
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025? 4 / 0
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open QF / 2R
    • b) French Open QF / Absent
    • c) Wimbledon SF / Absent
    • d) US Open W / 2R
Given last night's revelation about the neuroprocare quackery I'm more inclined to the latter, but if she looks good in Auckland and wins the first match then I'll soon forget about that and it's top 10 here we come.

  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season? 9
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025? no idea - whatever it takes to get to 9th ;)
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025? 2
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open R3
    • b) French Open R2
    • c) Wimbledon QF
    • d) US Open Win
I don't see why this is not achievable if she stays injury free and her overall fitness improves. She already has the game.

Just came here to check the answers to Q4, which is complete now. Looks like the person who got the closest numbers is...you!(?)
Smart enough not to predict any QFs or higher, which most others fell for. Not a bad year for Emma overall, but disappointing in the slams. But glad she played all four. Many answers had predicted 'Absent' in one or more slams.

I did want to give my quotes before the season started, but here goes. These are my best estimates, (with a little flex! :) ). Despite recent fitness news, I still feel hopeful to more or less keep to my original thoughts. I was hopeful for the Australian Open and though it seems she will have little court play by then, I think if she gets through the first two rounds she will pickup momentum and can do quite well.

One thing I do think for the new year, is that Emma will face more difficult opponents than last year - if only for the fact that I expect she'll go deeper in tournaments. However, I think she will relish the challenges as they come, and win some and loose some.

  1. What will Emma's ranking be at the end of the 2025 season? 23
  2. What will Emma's win-loss record be during 2025? 36-14 (not sure how this works out against number of tournaments played but...that's my guess)
  3. How many tournaments will Emma win in 2025? 1 (post USA open - Asian swing?)
  4. What round will Emma reach in each of the Grand Slams?
    • a) Australian Open - Quarters or semi
    • b) French Open -4R
    • c) Wimbledon -4R
    • d) US Open - Quarters

You do realize that the quarterfinals come after the 4th round and before the semis?

Well, as a group, she has a season end rank prediction of 18.

Looking at the current rankings, she's probably going to need around 2200-2400 total points just to get top 20, and she's on 810 right now in the live race. So around 1400-1600 points needed between now and the end of October.

Realistically, I think it's going to be hard to get there unless she peaks for the rest of grass season, and then has a few big 1000 runs along with a 250/500 tournament win somewhere.

I do think she can make top 25 though, which she'll likely need about another 1000 points to secure.

Her win/loss record prediction as a group is 38-15 and she's already 15-12. She'll need to go 23-3 between now and the end of season to make that. Very unlikely.

The silver lining is that she's on course to probably play around 50 matches this year.

My predictions are always wrong (well almost, I think I accidentally got the grass swing last year right) so I believe (or hope) this year I abstained from making a fool of myself. After the troubles Emma had in the first 3 months of this year, I would be happy if she ends the year somewhere in top 30. That would guarantee she would be seeded at the top 14 tournaments (4 x GSs and 10 x 1000s), entry to any 250 of her choice, and many 500s.
