LINZ, Austria (AP) -- Jelena Dokic advanced to the quarterfinals of the $565,000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament, struggling to a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (6), 6-3 victory over Iva Majoli.

The third-seeded Dokic lost to Lindsay Davenport in the finals last week in Zurish, Switzerland.

Davenport, seeded first at Linz, will meet Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic in her opening match Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France lost 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 to Chanda Rubin in the second round.

``The end of the season has been very hard physically,'' Tauziat said. ``I should have won this match.''

Tauziat will complete her singles career next week at the Sanex Championships in Munich, Germany. Tauziat, the 1998 Wimbledon runner-up, has indicated she will play a limited doubles schedule in 2002.

Rubin won at Linz in 1997 in her first appearance in the tournament. She has beaten Tauziat in three of their five matches.

Fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia overpowered Barbara Schwarz of Austria 6-1, 6-0. Dementieva will next face compatriot Tatiana Panova.

Sixth-seeded Sandrine Testud of France eliminated Angeles Montolio of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-2, and eighth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain beat countryman Magui Serna 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-0.

In a match between qualifiers, Tatiana Panova of Russia downed Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay 6-2, 6-3.

Fifth-seedntieva, who overpowered the qualifier 6-1, 6-0 in just 50 minutes. Dementieva, the fifth seed, will now meet fellow Russian Tatiana Panova in the second round.

In the final first round match, eighth seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario overcame a first set defeat to beat Magui Serna, also of Spain, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-0.
