It was suggested in another thread that players like Rita Kuti Kis and Aniko Kapros do not look very fit on court.

There are more Hungarian women I think in the top 150 than I think ever in women's tennis.

But I am beginning to wonder if perhaps fitness is a problem since the results of the Hungarians have not been very stellar outside of clay-court events.

Any opinions?

I saw Rita Kuti Kis playing, and she looked like she spent her off-season working at McDonald's rather than training. Didn't see Aniko or Petra Mandula at the AO so I can't comment...
But, I have seen them all play and the reason they only had success on clay last year (especially Rita and Petra) is because they weren't fit enough to keep up on the faster surfaces. It would definately do them all good to improve their fitness.

u def gotta be fit to do anything on a clay court.... maybe its speed?

rita definately isn't the fastest player, and she has huge loopy wind ups to her shots.... when she uses the right game plan on clay (like against jen in rome 2001) she's v good.

Well then I take a look at Zsofia Gubashi and she looks like she needs to gain weight. Way too skinny that girl is I think.

Rita must have gained lots of weight since Wimbledon cos I saw her there and she was pretty skinny. Makes sense though, her results this year have been way below par - as have Aniko's for the past few months.

Gubasci is superbly fit!

Kuti-Kis, Kapros both definitely need to do some training!

Mandula seems a bit flat footed and could still improve her fitness

It's just a shame about Rita and her results of late. I don't think she has done well since she beat Jennifer at the Italian Open last year.

Does anyone know why she has lost her motivation? She is not really lacking in talent, but she can't win a match.

quite a good serve as well. :) .... talent isn't lacking.... probably motivation at the moment ;)

I really like watching Rita play - she hits the ball very hard on clay because she has time to wind up her shots. She is not the fastest player on the tour, and I think Petra Mandula and her look like they could do with getting on a treadmill.

But I hope the Hungarian women prove they are better than clay-court specialists. They are ranked high because they have had stellar results on clay, but it's time they take taht extra step.

Kuti Kis definitely had a ton of cellulite as of last year's US Open. Kapros as well. So these are not "new additions."

Kuti Kis, Kapros, are a bit big, could probably benefit from slimming down a bit to improve their movement. Mandula could probably be a bit fitter aswell, but not too bad.

Gubacsi, as mentioned, is quite fit. If anything she could probably use a bit more muscle.

Marosi-Aracama is in fairly good condition aswell, quite tall, and fairly lean.

So, I don't think it's a Hungarian thing, maybe we just happen to notice it in them a bit more, because Rita, Aniko, and Petra all have talent, but have not been able to produce as much as maybe they could, due to fitness.

Hey Randy have you seen another young Hungarian player, Adrian Hegedus play? I remember she beat Rita in either Hawaii or Brazil (can't remember which) and she had a rather decent showing.

Again, it's exiting to see such talent coming out of Hungary I just hope they don't stop now and keep thriving.

Yeah, I really like the hungarian players and saw all their matches at the Aus Open and all, apart from Zsofia adn Savolt in the men could be fitter.
They are a great bunch though and always watch each others matches, along with Wartusch who is especially close to Mandula.
All have attractive games. When Rita beat Dokic a few years back it was reported she had lost 12 kilo's in 6 months...
