it seems to me that everyone really liked her, or rather didnt dislike her to say the least.

she left as i really came into caring about pro tennis and i cant even tell you if i ever saw her play
does anyone not care about a tape they could send me of her playing? or one i could borrow or purchase, prefferably borrow so that i dont spend my money that i want to buy a REALLY cool digital camera. please have sympathy...
but yeah, did anyone not like her?

I personally belive it is too close to call who is the greatest of all time, in my opinion, it is either Graf or Navratilova. I always remember the desire that steffi and Martina expressed to play centre court at wimbledon, on there own, to just enjoy each others talents. I'm sure like Martina, Steffi had many more admirers then haters.

Sorry... the only taped match I have at all is the '00 French final.

I loved Graf though. I honestly have to say that while Mary is my all-time fave... nothing made me happier (perhaps sadly?) than watching Graf play. My earliest memory is watching her play a match against Navratilova in the 80s, I believe. Anyway, I hope you find a tape of her... she's awesome

I've never really liked her, but then again i am a Hingis Fan, lol, no seriously i'm not sure what it is, i'm just not one of her fans! Personally, i believe Martina Navratilova was the best player, although i have great respect for everything Steffi achieved throughout her tennis career. She's definately close behind Martina.

Hate is a strong word, but trust me, there are plenty of people out there that do not like Steffi. They may not come out and say they hate her or dislike her, but just wait until one of the many "greatest ever" threads is started, or any discussion about the attack against Monica and you'll soon be able to separate those that love Steffi from those that are, to put it mildly, not so in love with her.

It is said that Graf hardly showed any sympathy for Monica and didn't show much grace or sportsmanship (however true it is)... so I guess there's always that stigma of Graf in Monica's fans minds...

It`s must be really difficult to dislike someone who just when into the court and always gave her best effort not only in the court but also off the court she was so classy, i could never seen her arguing, or throwing a racket, showing anger or blaming herself after defeats, she was a great player to see and she was a great player to play against.

see, the monica thing. i had no clue about because its before my time. i was like 8 or 9 when that would have happened. if i would have known i probably would not have cared. thats not nice of steffi and is it she didnt have sympathy, or it wasnt shown publicly.

steffi was fairly stoich on court right? never lost her cool and always had like...dignity? and a confident aura?

Nejedly Kanepi-the Graf you know is the Beloved vet. In her heyday Graf was just as unpopular as Seles,Navratilova, and Hingis were, or Venus is getting to be.
The general rule in tennis is that the established #1 is disliked by quite a few fans. Only after she is knocked off the top does the crowd once again warm up to her as they did BEFORE she the "Queen". It's the tennis circle of life.

A lot of Seles, Navratilova fans disliked Steffi. Plus
she wasn't exactly a warm personality in her early days. Many objected to her looks (after an Italian paper called her "an ugly potato-faced German" in 1987 she refused to return to Rome until 1996), she had a controversial father, and while she had an entertaining game when challenged, it wasn't fun seeing her spend 40 minutes destroying the competition, which she often did.

Like a good wine, Steffi got better with age to the tennis public. She was vulnerable on and off court.
She grew from an awkward teen into a pretty woman. And when Hingis took over as #1, Martina II took Steffi's role (young upstart villain), while Steffi was the beloved vet.

So yes, many hated Graf, just as many hate Hingis and Venus. Odds are if Hingis and Venus play long enough they too will be just as loved. The tennis circle of life has a way of repeating iteself.

@ Poe :

The same reason. It's been in 86 (when I've been 16) when Steffi beat Martina I in Berlin in two easy sets on clay. I watched the match and after that I admired that girl 'til today and I will 'til my very end !

As Monica has been stabbed 1993 in Hamburg my first thoughts have been: Stand up girl, wanna see those matches like the '92-one in Paris (final) again. Steffi tried to to fill the trench between them. And this has been made by the public. Personally, I think, they've never disliked each other (e.g. Stanford '98-chat on court)...
Steffi will be an ideal for me in my life for reaching my goals ...

Steffi Graf for ever.
