Well, I thought, shouldn't we have a thread for Di Hollands? Doesn't seem to be one here yet. After all, she has been playing pretty well of late. Dianne has been just about unbeatable in local money tournaments (although that is mostly beating Kairangi Vano, Shona Lee, and a few juniors like Tanya). She just qualified and won a round in the Sydney 25k. Maybe she'll go further. Seems to be playing at a level close to 300 now, beating a lot of people ranked 400 or 500 something and quite solidly for the most part. So far in Sydney she has beaten Miki Miyamura (Japan) (446), 7-5 6-3, Brooke Whitten (unranked) (AUS), 6-2 6-1, then Tyra Calderwood (560)(Aus) 6-2 6-1 in qualifying, then she beat Emelyn Starr (AUS) (413) 6-4 6-0 in the main draw first round. Now she faces Sally Peers, who beat Monique Adamczak. Regardless of what happens in this particular tournament, I'm guessing this will be a good couple of years for Dianne, barring injury. And of course she had that close match with Jelena Dokic in fed cup, but we can't really count that since Jelly is so up and down we have no idea how Jelena was playing in that match even though she played amazingly in the AO.

For those of you who don't know how Dianne plays, she's a kiwi, she's in great shape, she's a righty, mostly an attacking groundstroker who can also defend, she has a good whippy forehand :bounce:, (not huge but pretty big and she places it quite well), she moves really well:drool:, her backhand is okay (but she hits it a bit late and can miss as a result), her serve is... not very good , a lot of doublefaults normally and kind of a weird action with a bit of a low contact, but hopefully she can improve that. Volleys aren't great but alright, smash of course not that great, slice backhand is not that useful. So she normally stays back. Overall she is mentally tough, although the doublefaults do come into play (but I think that is technical rather than mental).

Oh, thanks for letting us know about that danker! :bounce: That sounds good, I was wondering when she was going to be in action next. I didn't notice that tournament in Indonesia, that fits Dianne's criteria of either Australia or Asia, and it's on hardcourt, which is Dianne's preferred surface. Dianne's ranking is now 793 so she is the third highest player currently in the qualifying list. With a bit of luck she might get into the main draw, but if not, I think her chances of qualifying are good. I hope there will be more tournaments over there, I assume Dianne wouldn't go all the way over there for just one tournie.

Edit: Dianne is also on the list for the 10k in Tarakan in Indonesia. She is 5th on the qualifying list there. She's currently 787 so with a good couple of weeks we could see her threaten her old personal best of 699.

I guess she won't be playing for a little while, I can't see her in any entry lists. As consolation, I found this pic of Dianne from 07 when she was an Arizona Wildcat. Also, somehow, she is gradually rising in the rankings without playing. I guess other people have points to defend while she has none. She is up to 777 now.

Dianne obviously went to play tournaments in the US. She got to the QF of the 10k in Brownsville, and lost in the second round of qualifying for a 50k in Grapevine. She obviously withdrew from the tournament in Evansville and also St Joseph, so I'm guessing she had planned a longer US stay but had to cut it short for some reason. Not sure where she'll be playing next. Her ranking is now 729.

Dianne won a Money Tournament in Margaret River last week, upsetting the top seed Emily Webley-Smith on the way. This week she is playing a 25k in Esperance, Australia. She has successfully qualified and has drawn Shiho Akita of Japan in the main draw. Currently her ranking is 696.

I'm still not sure why she had such a long break, but who knows, maybe it will lead to good things.

I think Dianne may have been injured... but this is uncomfirmed. A private injury if you get my drift. My source is some what reliable. But things are back on track now :)

Good luck in the first round! Great effort to qualify :worship:
first thing i thought was maybe pregnancy?

Since the old Di Hollands thread has died (and disappeared) I will start a new one.

This one will probably fall to the same fate, as she only plays like 5 tournaments a year. But when she does play, she's good.

Di is such a solid player. Just let down by her serve.

With a good schedule and staying injury free, she is more than capable of cracking the top 400.

The questions remains though, will she keep playing?
