Dechy's Australian Open Status In Doubt

By Adrianna Outlaw
01/07/2003

Gold Coast tournament champion Nathalie Dechy was sent to an early retirement today with a strained thigh. The injury forced her to retire from her Canberra Classic match with Marlene Weingartner while trailing 5-0 and may threaten her status for next week’s Australian Open.

The 19th-ranked Dechy would be seeded 16th at the Australian Open due to the withdrawals by sixth-ranked Amelie Mauresmo, ninth-ranked Jelena Dokic and 10th-ranked Martina Hingis.

The 23-year-old French woman, who beat Swiss teenager Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian to win the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts title on Saturday, is eager to play the Australian Open, but said she won’t compete if her present pain persists.

“If it’s still painful, I won’t play another tournament,” Dechy said. “But I really think and hope it will be better to start on Monday.”
