Oh no Pat needs to be part of a Davis Cup-winning team before he retires.

This is the dumbest decision that could have been made. Even if they come back from a set down, they will be tired for tomorrow's singles. Rafter, especially, will be hurting, and there is no one on the Australian team to replace either Rafter or Hewitt in singles.

The only way this would have worked is if they won the doubles, and since it looks like they're going down 1-2 they've wasted a large amount of effort from Pat and Lleyton.

If I were Fitzie right now I'd tell them to throw the match as quickly as possible and hope they get enough rest for the reverse singles.

Bolloooooooooooocks

I also dont get why Hewitt and Rafter are playing doubles. Doesn't Australia have some best doubles team in the world?

Anyway,

Pioline/Santoro leads Hewitt/Rafter, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, 4-1*

Good, looks like they're throwing it

Shouldn't have had to be this way, though.

They can still pick up two wins tomorrow...rest, boys, rest!

It is just fair that France wins in Australia, isn't it.
Statistically, the team winning the doubles match has the most chances to win overall.
Any update on the score?

Hurley,

I must admit I do not understand why Fitzgerald did not chose Woodbridge for the double :

1) When there is a tie 1-1 after the singles, you know that the doubles match will be instrumental in the victory. And Todd is for sure one of the best doubles players in the world.

2) Even if Australia wins the doubles match, the next two singles will be extremely important and you would expect to have all singles players in the best possible physical condition.

I totally agree Steveg.

I think this was an awful decision by Fitzie.

There has been an interview of Todd Woodbridge in the December Tennis Magazine (French paper).

Approximate and quick translation is :

Are you certain to play the doubles match of this Davis Cup Final?
No, but I think I will be on the court. This uncertainty is besides disappointing for me as I believe - and this is not vanity - that I am the best doubles player in the world on the court right side. The weakness of the present Australian team is that it does not have a regular doubles team. In semi-finals, I played with Wayne Arthurs who is a great server but the rest of his game is not as solid and it is sometimes difficult for me to make up for his possible weaknesses. I think that if I were to play with Lleyton in Melbourne, it would be extremely hard to beat us. A Hewitt - Rafter team is another option our captain has. This being said, I think I will know my lot Friday evening [smile]. It will depend on the singles matches duration.
If you were playing doubles, you would probably face Cedric Pioline and Fabrice Santoro, against whom you have never played in doubles. What do you think of this team?
This is an interesting combination. Pioline serves, returns and volleys very well. Santoro is an inspired player. We know it : it will be a critical match. Statistics prove it : since 1978, all Davis Cup finals have been won by the country who won the doubles match.

Thanks for the result and your support TBE.

I just hope that statistics will prove to be right. But tomorrow will be a hard day.

Aussies are known to be tough in all sports and our little Frenchies will have to fight to the last point. There is still one point missing.

I wish I could see matches on TV this Sunday. The atmosphere will be electrifying . Must be great to be in Melbourne these days.

I just hope tomorrow performance will give a better image of France in Australia than Marie Joe Perec behaviour during the last Olympic Games .
