I am not sure about that. The numbers from Jannak and those published on rst are differnt, but I trust Jannak's numbers, and they say that if Davenprot beats Clijsters, she leapfrogs Capriati by several points. As I posted it previously, Capriati might go into history as the weakest #1. By current system it seems to me that #1 has to have above 5000 points to hope to keep for any long time.

Yes, If Lindsay beats Kim, Davenport will end the year @ #1!

Then all the doubters can start jumping on her case about why she isn't #1...and so and so is... blah blah blah... (Sorry for the cynicism!)

That will be people whose religious beliefs are that all tennis is about is winning Slams ( Slam religion ), rather than just winning. Don't argue with them, it is not of any use to discuss people's religions, you won't convince then anyway.

[email protected] Why not discuss religion? Lindsay Davenport herself is a member of the Slam religion. What would you call yourself-a member of the computerite "religion"?

Anyhow, for Davenport's sake, I hope she wins here(even if I am a Capriati fan) so she has the confidence to come back and challenge for the "slam" #1!

I have no religion, Rollo. Religion, as Karl Marx said, is people's opium.

I just think it is a shame that Jen Cap was unable to get past Sandrine Testud. Jen played so wonderfully the first 7 months of the tour (up to W semi's) and now she seems so agitated. I was hoping she would keep the same momentumn, confidence and big smile she had this spring. I have enjoyed this year tremendously, primarily because of Jennifer Capriati and I hope she starts off the AO without all the anxiety.

As for her being a weak number 1...winning 2 consecutive slams and then 2 semis is a great year by anyone's standards. I think it is great that Lindsay has played so superbly this fall. I hope this gives her the confidence to challenge for the big events next year. I think she should be able to compete better with Venus and Serena.

I pick Serena to win the whole event now over LD.

GO LINDSAY!!!!! TAKE IT, Dont say they deserve it rather than you do. If Jen won here then you did'nt deserve it. But you are the one winning so you are number one.
Now, Send Serena back into practice with her sister.

GO LINDSAY!!!!!

I think Lindsay deserves No. 1 rank. She didn't win a grand slam this year, but she has won many tournaments and she defeated many top players. I hope she will win Championships.

Whoever end up number one will deserve it.
Its remarkable in Lindsay's case, since she spent a chunk of time out injured. However, and incredible indoor season, and consistent results all year round seem to be enough, so congrats to her

I will be laughing my ass off however, when everyone comes out to congratulate LIndsay, who early slammed Hingis for being a slamless number 1 in 2000. I think Hingis deserved it then, and Lindsay will deserve it if she beats Clisters.

But its absolutely hilarious how hypocritical people can be when the tables turn

Martina not winning slams was not the only reason she was slammed. In addition to that, she hadn't beaten a player in the top 10 in months! and hadn't won a title since February! Compare that to Davey who's won her last 3 tourneys, consistently beating other top 10 along the way. So, IMHO there is a big difference in Lindsay ending the year at #1 and Martina Hingis being in that position.

btw--who WAS the last top 10 player that Martina Hingis actually beat?

In answer to Moon's question - sheesh! i hadn't realised it had been so long since Martina had beaten a Top 10 player. She beat Dokic at the Open although Dokic was #13 at the time. So officially, the last top 10 players she beat were at Charleston when she beat Mauresmo who was #9 and Martinez who was #8.

The last top 10 players she beat before then was at the Australian Open beating the Williams sisters....

And I think Lindsay would be a deserving #1 if she happens to beat Clijsters. She has had the most consistent season, not losing before the quarter finals in any of her tournaments. She hasn't really suffered any major upsets, and plus she's won the most titles on tour this season.

The fact that she can be #1 without having the greatest Grand Slam season just goes to show how consistent overall she is and how well she does on the regular tour to balance it out. Because as we always harp on, the Grand Slams may be the most important tournies but they aren't the only tournies - they count as just 4 results in your best 17 (albeit the most important 4, i'm not discounting that at all).

When the history books are written, the Grand Slams is more important than regular tournaments. Martina Hingis hasn't won a Grand slam in two years, but still managed to hold on to #1 by winning regular tournaments. I think the Slams should be worth more points and Jennifer was not a weak #1. She didn't win many tour tournaments; however, she won two of the Slams and that should count for a whole lot more than some tour torunaments that no one will remember 5 years from now!

Lindsay wont be saying, "Oh I deserve this blah blah blah" so it will be harder to slamm her because she'll be agreeing with her critics. How ironic....

Yeah Davenport will be number 1 soon. But really, currently no one deserves to be number 1, Venus played too little. Capriati won too little. Lindsay won too little slams. But in the end it is Lindsay who would get it after a great indoor season. Funny how we thought that Lindsay was never in contetntion at the beginning of the year.

The difference between Lindsay and Martina being a slamless number 1 is that Lindsay has a winning record against every else other than the Williams. Martina on the other hand has lost to a whole bunch of players, so in a way, Lindsay is better than Martina, so if there were 2 slamless number 1s, Lindsay is more deserving.

Q. Obviously, much depends on how far Jennifer goes. Do you still see the No. 1 as a possible target for you this week?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No. Never once has it crossed my mind in the last month. I've always felt like the No. 1 player should have excelled in the biggest tournaments. The biggest tournaments are the Grand Slams. I didn't get to one final. Two semis and a quarter isn't really good enough, I don't think. You know, Jennifer and Venus had far better results in the Grand Slams, and deserve it. I've done the best I can on the normal tour, won a lot of tournaments. Maybe next year if I win the Australian or win Wimbledon or whatever, then obviously I feel like I deserve it. At this point I'm happy to end the year at 2. I have no problems at all with that.
