Court troubles in Leipzig

September 22, 2003
LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) -- Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic beat Magui Serna of Spain 6-1, 7-5 Monday at the Sparkassen Cup in a match interrupted for an hour because of air bubbles on the carpeted court.

With the score 2-2 in the second set, the air conditioning system caused air bubbles to surface on the carpet. The problem went away once it was turned off.

``It was like we were on the sea, like we were flowing,'' Chladkova said. ``It was hardly possible to even walk,''

Chladkova next plays Justine Henin-Hardenne in the second round. The Belgian hasn't played since downing Kim Clijsters two weeks ago in the U.S. Open final for her second major title of the year.

``She's improved her game unbelievably this year,'' Chladkova said. ``But it's still a couple of days away so I'm not thinking about it too much.''

Henin-Hardenne is chasing Clisters' No. 1 ranking. If both reach the final and Henin-Hardenne wins, she could take the top spot at Filderstadt in early October.

In other first-round matches, fifth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia beat Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-5, 6-2, and eighth-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy downed Eleni Danilidou of Greece 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-2.

Switzerland's Patty Schnyder rallied past Russia's Elena Likhovtseva 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3.
