Group 'A' - Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, Amanda Coetzer

Group 'B' - Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Amelie Mauresmo

Which group, AS A GROUP, has better court coverage?

Lindsay covers court very well. She uses her height very effectively. She gets to net in three steps, goes from sideline to sideline in four steps, and her groundstrokes are so hard most players don't get a chance to attack her relative lack of agility. Same with Monica, really. Sure Justine is way faster, but there's more to court coverage than foot speed.

On the other hand, have you checked out the statlines in some of Martina's losing matches. VERY lopsided in the winners department. If someone not named Williams hits 25 winners on you, your court coverage isn't very good.

It's not about who's the fastest. It's about who's the hardest to hit a winner by. I'd rather try to hit the ball past Amanda than Lindsay any day.

Lindsayfan - Lindsay v Venus is kinda of a silly comparison when Lindsay herself says Venus covers court better. This is not a surprise. Venus is fast and tall. The original lists I established deliberately have fast players in one group, tall players in the other, but none who were tall and fast.

Generally speaking though, the #1 player will be above average in court coverage or they wouldn't BE #1.

The other reason to avoid a Venus vs. Lindsay comparison is that a lot of those threads are turning nasty. Who needs it? Venus and Lindsay both added to their respective lines in the history books this year. Venus got a couple GS titles. Lindsay ended the year #1 for the 2nd time. I'm sure neither of them feels they had a BAD year.

Lindsayfan - Oh. Sorry. Missed the word 'return'.

My opinion will likely not be shared by many, but as good as Venus's return is, this is not a contest. Lindsay's the best returner in the game. I cringe when Venus has to hit a second serve against her. The only player who seems not to suffer when serving to Lindsay is Serena.

How about this:
Group A: Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
Group B: Venus Williams, Amanda Coetzer, Martina Hingis
