Kim looks to get back in Houston

(Kim practicing earlier today in Houston)

Kim Clijsters looks to get back in form here in Houston after having some tough weeks on the circuit. "I've really been struggling this year and i need to get my confidence here in Houston." Clijsters faces Flavia Penetta in singles play and will play doubles with sister Elke.

Lena hates her draw.

Myskina, Dokic, and Daniela in her half. Pfff... Tier II's are supposed to be easy. :p

Anastasia Myskina (RUS) def. Barbara Schett (THA) 6-2; 6-4

Natsya played excellent power tennis today. She hit 26 clean winners, and made just 21 unforced errors. For a player as high risk as Myskina, such numbers are an excellent statistic. She dominated play from the beginning to end of each point, and though she went through a patchy streak at the beginning of the second, she rebounded in time to close out the match. Still, she needs to work on her variety. I felt that during the grass season, she was adding a little more topspin to her game, going for angles a little more, and not trying to hit hard all the time. She will need every skill she possesses to take out Bovina in the next round:eek: .

5-2 Dokic
Game, Set, and Match: Jelena Dokic

Jelena Dokic (YUG) def. Dinara Safina (RUS) 7-5; 6-2

Jelena has a great blend of power and consistency. She hits the ball hard, and yet has enough energy left over to be able to place her shots well too. She makes few mistakes, and Safina found that challenging. Even when the Russian hit her hardest, Dokic was still able to stay in the point (and win some of them) by slicing back ball after ball, and playing the part of a retriever for a bit. However, the next match will be a true test for Dokic. She may want to play her second set strategy more prominently, but that depends on how her opponent plays today.

Third and Final Set, Clijsters to Serve:

1-2 Clijsters

2-2
2-3 Clijsters
2-4 Clijsters
2-5 Clijsters

3-5 Clijsters
4-5 Clijsters

Game, Set, and Match: Elke Clijsters

Elke Clijsters (BEL) def. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 2-6; 7-5; 6-4

Daniela choked BIG TIME!!!!! She tried to be a counter-puncher, but she was a bit too aggressive, and had no points left over towards the end of each set to close out the match. It is really too bad, because she couldn't handle Elke stepping things up a notch, and yet won Indian Wells last week saving more matchpoints than can be counted on one's hands.
