Because the computer rolls results over 52 weeks, a player becomes #1 weeks or even months after it's obvious she is on top. After winning the French, Capriati was clearly #1 in the public's mind, just as Venus was last year.
No one performed better than Jen this year in the slams. She may not stay #1 long, but at least she's a legit #1!
As for Venus getting to #1-it's all in her hands. If she plays Linz and Munich she should have a shot at it this year. A better result than Capriati at the Aussie would also get her there. The bottom line is she has to play though.
Most of the points are inthe GS tournaments. Jenn won 2 and had 2 SF in 2001. Venus won 2, had i SF and 1 first round loss. That's about 400 points right there. Then there are bonus points. Jenn beat a #1 to win OZ. 200 points. Venus beat a #10 to win the USOpen. 86 points (I think). Add in Jennhas played about four more tournaments than Venus and there you have it.
Why can't people admit that Venus played 4 less tournaments than the 17 allowable? That is the reason jennifer got to number 1 first. Lindsay didn't win any slams and neither did Martina. It isn't just about slams.
Capriati has points from 17 tournaments, while venus has points from 13.
Well looks like nothing ever changes..been away from the boards since WTA's went down. and people are still beating issues in the ground. No buts about it, Jennifer deserves to be #1! I just wish Martina would have played the match. People act like it was a given that she would have beaten Lindsay(LMAO by the way!) This one fall is not the cause of Martina losing her #1 ranking. It is due to regularly getting whipped by the top players, and not winning grand slams.
Hey Guys! Jennifer has played an amazing year, one that she has earned through hard work and dedication. Regardless if you accept Jennifer as the number one she is; and at this point in time no one else deserves to be in her place right now. Not only is she enjoying a great singles year, but is currently sitting inside the top 100 in doubles also. Jennifer is the number one, she deserves it, and should be praised for her heroic accomplishments.
At this moment its obvious that Venus is better then Jennifer.
Venus beat her the last couple times and she has won more tournaments recently, but Jennifer did great in the beginning and didnt had many points to defend like Venus who already won Wimbledon and the US open last year.
Honestly i dont think she will hold it that long, she isnt winning tournament anymore and has in the begin of 2002 much points too defend.
But well we just have to wait and see.
can't we just be happy that jen is finally in the #1 spot? I mean c'mon, she deserves it. I know that venus is the best player right now but she's not #1, it's becuz she doesn't play that often, if she wants to be #1, she should play a lot more tournaments. jen has done that and she is now #1! let's just be happy that she's #1, i mean this is suppose to be a happy day not a bashing day for the #1 ranked person. anyway, woohoo, jen is #1!
