Considering this maybe goes against the belief of most GMers, this feels like thread-worthy news

---

Three-time U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters, who will retire after the conclusion of this year’s event, says she is taking the tournament seriously. Despite playing sparingly this season due to injuries, the 29-year-old has entered the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. She chose not to play any hard court warm-up tournaments.

“Of course it's to try and win,” Clijsters said when asked whether she’s is viewing the tournament as more of career celebration. “My mindset is not any different. I haven't played many matches or many tournaments. I really believe that physically I can do it. have trained very hard for the last year to try and stay in good shape. I feel that I'm probably in maybe the best shape that I have been in. I'm not worried that, you know, that I'm physically not ready for it.”

In all seriousness, I do think this is a positive sign. Kim isn't usually one to run her mouth unless she thinks she has a good chance (she was pretty modest when asked what her goals were at Wimbledon and the Olympics), so I think these comments do show she genuinely thinks she has a chance

Well of course she's confident since she's been undefeated here for 9 years. I believe she's a little deluded when she says she's in the best shape ever, and "training hard" probably has a very different meaning now that she has a daughter. Hopefully Kimmie can make a good performance for her last tournament, and this is most likely the best place for her to retire.

Even if none of us believe she can win the USO for a fourth time, it's good to see that she's still motivated to try and win.

Shes playing doubles with Flipkens I think it will help her gets some more matches early and gets her net game working which is quite good, I remember watching her play mixed at Wimbledon a few years ago she has a good net game.

playing everything is a way to say goodbye to all of the fans...i guess...she's a wild card to win the US Open...it's possible...but her draw is anything but easy...

Bob Bryan.
Great, Bob is a specialist in farewells, remember when he and Navratilova won the mixed doubles at the 2006 US Open (Nav's last tournament)?
