Tell me? How much nicer could an interview be? And remember, this tournament started with a controversy over Lindsay questioning Venus' withdrawal.

It doesn't get any classier than this.......

An interview with Serena Williams

Q. You haven't played a lot of matches this year like you wanted to. How frustrating is it to miss out on the last one?

SERENA WILLIAMS: It's more strange than frustrating. I completely understand the position that Lindsay is in.

Q. When did you find out about the possibility there wasn't going to be a match?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I was playing around 12:15, 12:20-ish. They came on the court, got me, talked to me about it.

Q. Did you get a chance to talk to Lindsay about it a little bit?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I talked to her about it. She's feeling pretty rough. I think she had this injury before. You can see in her match yesterday at the end, she was holding her leg. I just hope she gets better soon. I never had a win like this before.

Q. Sorry?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I never had a win like this before.

Q. You're going to go home now and start getting ready for Australia?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I'm going to go home. I've been waiting. I'm ready to get back. I'll take maybe a day off (smiling). I'll get ready for Australia. I'm playing really well now, working hard in practice. I know what I need to do.

Q. You said the other day No. 1 is what you wanted to do. Can you talk about your goals for next season?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I'm just looking for some titles, winning. I'm sure if I win the titles, the ranking is going to come. I'm just going to be focused. We'll see what happens, like I say. Keep thinking positive, stay focused throughout the year than just bits and parts.

Q. You are going to play more tournaments, you were saying?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Hopefully, if things work out. If I stay healthy, I'm definitely going to try to play a few more events. If not, we'll see. We'll have to wait and see what all happens. I can't predict the future.

Q. Did you talk to Lindsay? What did you say to her?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I just made sure she felt okay. Like I said, I kind of know how it is to be a bit injured. She was really nervous because I think she had to go out.

Q. How about for the fans? They came out to see the match, bought the tickets. How do you feel about that?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, obviously all my sympathy goes out to the fans. I never really have been to many events, but if it was something like this happened, I would feel pretty bad. But at the same time you have to understand it's athletics. That's why my dad always encouraged us to go to school and get an education. You never know what happens. All of a sudden one day you could be in a car accident. It may be different if I was a doctor; you can still go on. As an athlete, you have to think about these things. I can completely understand.

Q. In conclusion, what is your view of these championships being here in Germany rather than Madison Square Garden? Do you think it worked, been a success?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I think it's been a great success. I think the tournament director here is wonderful, a great guy, I know him. I have a clean record here in Munich, so... (laughter). I like it here. Whenever I play here, I'm going to keep winning. I've been pretty tough here, really tough. It's a good city. It's a great city. It's nice. It's a good part of the year, nice in fall. A nice way to end the year. The Germans here are really nice. They always come out and support the event, so I think it turned out pretty well.

Q. Is it weird to make that much money without playing for it?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I worked for it years ago, years and years ago. I definitely worked for it and I earned it. Would you feel weird if I gave you a check? Come on (laughter)? I'm ready to accept.

nice interview, don't see why this is so classy. I don't know what she should have said otherwise.

Serena is growing, maturing and that can only make her a better player. I would not bet against her at the Aussie.

I don't think the interview is especially "classy". It's just a nice, simple interview in which she said the correct things. Not that big a deal really.

However! You are incorrect in this comment about Lindsay. Lindsay was the only player who came out in defense of Venus. She said that the investigation of Venus' wrist irritation was stupid. She went on to say that tennis is an individual sport and players should not play if they don't want to.

You know what? Don't even take my word for it. Go read the article for yourself...

Now tell me where you found this controversy over Lindsay questioning Venus' withdrawal.
TC

rmc I agree with you buddy. this is a great classy interview from Serena. She didn't say one negative thing. And it was sweet of her to talk to Lindsay about her injury. Very classy indeed. Also she was so witty in her reply about getting paid huge bucks for winning Munich.

Serena is becoming a classy player and I do belive she is on a mission to become #1.

Fearless Serena rules

RMC:
Thanks for the reference. I actually did see that thread but had a completely different reaction than you did. First, because I actually work in media, I am extremely careful not to fall for sensationalistic headlines but to actually read what the players actually say in their own words. If you ignore the sensationalism of the headlines of the article you posted (and the other like it that follows immediately after), and read what Davenport ACTUALLY says, her words are far less critical than the writers concluded. Certainly Jago makes a whole bunch of assumptions! And like I said, read the piece that I posted in which Lindsay lietrally DEFENDS Venus. Her criticism (and mine) of Venus' decision was not the FACT of the decision but the lateness of it. That's all and that's fair.

Let's not let the media manipulate us into fighting over non-existent controversies.
TC

TC,

Thank you SO MUCH for the patronizing REPLY! How stupid of me to have my own interpretation of the all the MEDIA reports of Lindsay's questioning Venus' withdrawal. Exactly what is the definition of a controversy?

But, YOU being in the media, as you state, obviously, that means that YOU know better than I would. Thank you so much for being smarter than me.

Now, you being in the media, I KNOW you are used to carefully scrutinizing words. I wrote, "controversy over Lindsay questioning Venus' withdrawal"

Please, further clarify for my SIMPLE mind, what I said that is incorrect, and after you all felt a strong need to correct me, please with your WISDOM, tell me what I WROTE that is incorrect.

Now you wrote, EXACTLY

"Now tell me where you found this controversy over Lindsay questioning Venus' withdrawal."

As you admit, I showed it to you. Was that not considered a controversy? Please tell me, oh omniscient one!

And gee. Why was it so important for you to state that you didn't think that Serena's interview was "classy"? As a journalist, what purpose did that serve?

I LOVE you smart people.

Hmm I found nothing contraversial about Lindsay's comments about Venus withdrawing earlier in the week.

If it was contraversial it was because the media made it that way.

I love it how we still like to make mountains out of molehills. Somethings never change even on this board.

I think that Serena and Venus handle the many controversies surrounding them very well. Much better than other players who always take the bait but only end up making themselves look petty. Serena came into this tournament with a lot of criticism and discussion about her sister, particularly from Lindsay, but she remained above it.

Gee RMC:
I don't what got up your ass! I did not at all mean to patronize you and if that is how you genuinely read my comments, then I apologise unequivocally.

To clarify...my points were simply this.

1. You described Serena's interview as "classy" in your title. I don't agree. I think it was a nice, simple, basic interview in which she said everything she was supposed to say. I didn't see anything especially classy about it.

2. You stated that the tourny had started with controversy over negative comments made by Lindsay about Venus. I was only pointing out that there were other media reports that negated this POV. Also, the reports that you referenced in which Lindsay was supposedly being negative were simply sensationalistic IMO.

If I've succeeded in pissing you off again, I'll just have to live with that bec I don't know how else to to say what it is I'm trying to say.

Peace out.
TC

TC you seem to be one of the more objective Williams fans I have seen around. Great insight but don't fight losing battles they are not worth it.

RMC is entitled to his opinions and so are we.

RMC, good points made as well as tc

i think serena williams and her sister venus williams are great players and without venus tennis gts boring somewhat, i also think both sisters have matured so much, they have become classy in their interviews, maybe they are a bit over confident sometimes, but that is what makes a person win in life, SOOOOO KUDAS TO VENUS AND SERENA

AND VENUS HOPE U ARE BACK SOON, BECUASE IF I SEE ANOTHER JENNIFER CAPPRIATI MATCH I WILL PUKE

I think it's not so much the interview that's "classy", but Serena's actions. She didn't have to speak to Lindsay at all after her injury, especially after Lindsay expressed her negative opinions about Venus at the beginning of the tournament; and there's probably a time in her early career that she wouldn't have. I think that both sisters are becoming "classier" individuals because of their consideration for the other players on the tour.

I also liked the way Serena showed consern for Henin at the net after their match. She had some kind words, a warm smile, and a little pat on the back.
