i watched the match live but couldn't get the volume on the streaming site...what happened at the net? Also the handshake wasn't shown but seemed like something was up - Yastremska seemed hurt (both physically injured and mentally frustrated) and Kuznetsova went over to her side and tried to talk to her, but Yastremska wasn't responding?
Couldn't figure out what was going on. Anyone explain? or am I overthinking this?
Note that while this was happening, they replayed a point while Yastremska was serving being down 2-5 0-30, and twisted her foot - anything to do with that perhaps?
And also overall feel like Yastremska gave up in the final game or two...

Dayana still mentally weak after failing to close out matches in tight second. Had 2 backhand errors on match points at 5-3. The first one was forced error but second was all her own doing dumping ball into the net. Kuznetsova vs Putinseva should be a decent 3-setter, too.

Massive win for Sveta! Quite some fantastic play from her in parts. Not a single DF and 5 aces in the final set. She really proved her worthiness of the WCs for these events beating several good players. :yeah:

Dayana  She rolled her ankle in the final service game. Hopefully she will be fully healthy for the US Open and withdraws from the Bronx to give her ankle maximum rest. She is such an exciting prospect.

It’s likely the ankle threw her off. But it seems that Yastremska is just your average BB. Not at all surprised by this result. Kuznetsova did the same to vekic - but at least Donna could blame fatigue & much slower conditions.

Sveta played an incredible match. Really they both did. Very high quality and every point was a battle. Both players gave it their all as if their careers were on the line or even the rights of possession of Crimea were at stake. For someone who hits as hard as Dayana she makes surprisingly few errors and most of the errors she did produce came after very long hard fought points. But then practically every point seemed to be a long hard fought one.

Sveta played ridiculously well, better than I seen her play in a long, long time. I thought she played a great match against Sevastova but this was even better. Her ability to retrieve whatever Dayana threw at her and send it back with interest was scary. After a match like that, and considering Sveta's age, I would be surprised if she could maintain the standard she showed today in tomorrow's match. But if she can, I give her a great chance of getting past Stephens or Putintseva tomorrow.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Sveta went very much out of her way to show Dayana her concern for her injury and Dayana pretty much ignored her. Not a good look for Dayana but I suppose given that she had just hurt herself and wouldn't have been in the best frame of mind, one can give her a pass.

Yeah Dayana seemed completely unaware or was just too overwhelmed by the shock of that roll. Such a shame this great match had such an anticlimatic ending.

She’s only 19, so still a developing player. Dayana is currently ranked @ 32, won 3 WTA titles, making sure & steady progress, and has a ferocious appetite to win. And possibly would /should have won this match, had it not been for the injury. I mean, what do u want this girl to do??!!!

I didn't see this match, but I'm not surprised. I always thought Sveta was one of the nicest players out there.

I don't want to see her retire from tennis. Hope she has some good years left in her.

Didn’t see the match, just followed the score- but I believe sveta fought off 1 or 2 match points? Each game looked like a crazy battle. What a great unexpected surprise, and I’m glad she didn’t let that lopsided Halep loss last week get her down

Yastremska was definitely limping at the end. She's young and they have to watch out they dont overplay
All of the teens, Andreescu, Vondrousova now 20, Anisimova, Yastremska, they all have to not overplay and dont rush back after an injury
This sport is physically grueling especially for players who win a lot of matches

I started watching in the second set when Sveta was playing tough and withstanding the bashing barrage to squeeze out a win >> then it went downhill for Daya.
