In 2007 the prize money will be increased to $170,000 instead of $145,000. The final will be played on a Saturday instead of a Friday, meaning both SFs will be played on the Friday. The draw has been increased to 48 players instead of 32.

Also the tournament is investigating into the option of televising the final to an international sporting audience.

These changes sound great to me :)

48 player draw for a Tier IV? or is it upgrading to Tier III?

Yeah I thought that was strange as well but the article didn't mention the Tier level of the event

cool - so more players can play down under, means more lower ranked player can enter the qualifying :)

$170,000 means Tier III.

This has been done due to the cancellation of the Canberra event. More players can now enter Hobart :)

48 draw??? That sounds like getting rid of either Canberra or qualifying in these events...

I mean, is not like players are queing to get into Hobart draws...I believe some unranked girls were accepted in qualys and if I'm not mistaken there were byes too :help:

I'm sorry, but this is a fucking joke. I'm happy for this tourney and all. But the ASB Classic has better facilities, and has 10 x the pulling power of this tourney. We have asked to be updated to a Tier III for years now. This year we had sell outs for every day of the tourney.

Shitty decision...

*Less points for low-ranked players (winning a match or two here gives you less points than in a Tier IV)

*Less money for all players

*Less players in a WTA MD that week

*Less spots for low ranked players in qualies

*Less time to recover from playing 5 or 6 matches in a row playing the final on Saturday and then leaving for Melbourne having to play maybe on Monday.

Yeah, but I really don't see what the alternative was. You scrap a whole tournament (Canberra), and that leaves about 64 players with nowhere to play.
