If there wasn’t so much money for simply showing up for a slam then there wouldn’t be this problem.
But if she pulled out before the match she would've gotten half her pay for doing nothing.

Sometimes you think you can play and it gets much worse during a match
The slams are telling players that if you show up for round 1, you'd better play the whole match and look like you're trying

Yeah, I don’t agree with that rule either <img src="https://www.tennisforum.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Laugh Out Loud" class="inlineimg" />

Based on what?

There were five players that won equal or less games in completed matches in the first round (Sharapova, Giorgi, Soribes-Tormo, Zheng, Jorovic). Their five opponents dropped a minimum of 11 games lost in the 2nd round, so not that difficult to win games against them actually. 0:) :grin2:

It's not good for her case that she tweeted she'd already been having back pains before the match, it's exactly the sort of scenario for which the rule exists
Okay, that´s not very bright. :SNE:

Of course it was the right decision from her to try, since you can beat Babos at 60-70%, just should have completed the match somehow and not show the injury too much. The first set was quite long after all.

GS R1 prizemoney is literally the single best and most fair thing in tennis

It's the life support for the whole tour, that makes pursuing this career possible. Without that guarantee money a lot less people would be able to even take up this sport seriously, and the overall quality would tumble down dramatically.

Could of just withdrawn and enjoyed the sights and sounds of NYC for doing nothing.
