HONG KONG (AP) -- American Jennifer Capriati won her opening match at the Hong Kong Ladies Challenge in just 34 minutes Thursday, routing Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja 6-0, 6-1.

The world's No. 2-ranked player, prepared to defend her Australian Open title later this month, was hardly tested by the 17-year-old rookie, ranked No. 147th.

``I think I am in better form than I was at this time last year,'' said Capriati, who also won the French Open last season. ``I think I am better shape for the Australian Open and that's my goal. It's a task, and it's an exciting challenge, and I will be put to the test in Australia.''

Capriati will play Amanda Coetzer in Friday's semifinals. The other semifinal will be between Mary Pierce and Elena Dementieva who beat Tamarine Tanasugarn 5-7 6-4 6-4. The Russian came back from a deficit in the last two sets to win.
