ROME (Reuters) - Jennifer Capriati progressed smoothly to the last 16 of the Rome Masters on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga.

The American had lost her only previous meeting with Zuluaga at Roland Garros in 2000.

Having bustled through the first set, the fifth-seeded Capriati dropped serve in the first game of the second set then held off four break points to avoid going 0-3 down.

She broke back in the sixth game with a forehand pass and then lifted her game to serve for the match, which she closed out on a smash.

"At 0-40 in the third game (of the second set) it was a dangerous situation. It's difficult to come back from 0-3 down," she told reporters afterwards.

"But it's (the first match) always a little difficult everywhere you go: new surface, new crowd.

"I'm pleased with the way I played, especially against someone you think you're going to have a tough match against.

Capriati has performed consistently on tour this year, finishing runner-up in Miami and making semi-finals in Dubai, Indian Wells, Amelia Island and Berlin.
