crosscourt every time?? She always slices that thing crosscourt - to the middle of the court. Serena kept hitting it into the net at the French, and Kim just hit it down the middle of the court. Players should be onto this, and practice hitting off that shot.

anyone?

Justine also should lose serve more. In most matches this Open, she only served around 50%. That's pretty common for her. Kim went after a number of 2nd serves, but she missed by yards. Kim really should have broken more :(

the underspin keeps the ball really low to the ground, and it's not that easy to lift it over the net.

that explains for all the net errors. and if you dont add enough topspin, you will just float the ball up.

justine served pretty badly this tournament and still won... it says a lot

The thing´s that Justine lets the ball drop so quickly, you can´t do much with it.

moby - that's my point, though. Players know to expect this from her, and they should thus be prepared for it. Kim should have had her coach hit those shots to her over and over so she gets used to hitting them.

anyway what WOULD EXACTLY YOUR POINT BE???

she should hit it DOWN THE LINE when pulled off the court for a clean winner or what? No. because the slice would be slow and kim or whoever is over there would then have the whole crosscourt open to hit an angled topspin forehand for a clean winner. hitting the slice back crosscourt when on the defensive is the only sensible play. IT IS CALLED NEUTRALIZING the point.

treufreund - my point is that her shot is the same each time, yet players don't seem to be ready to do anything with it. I am criticizing her opponents, not her. She should obviously keep doing it since it works.

Justine's shots are well disguised and well executed. You don't kno where it'll land or if it'll be a dropshot.

Martian - huh? Kim seemed to anticipate them pretty well (especially on the point to go up 5-4). Anyway, this isn't about all her shots; i's not hard to predict her slice at all. Every time she is pulled wide on her backhand side, she slices it crosscourt to around the service line.

But her slices are deep, when she is pulled wide, Kim goes forward to the net. But she gets sidetracked by the deep slices and have to peddle backwards. That's the reason the play puts Justine back on the offensive.

She has a lot more weapons then just that slice. She mixes them up real well. Her topspin backhand is the most beautiful thing in the game and her slice backhand plays a big part in setting up a point where she can go for her topspin bh.
She doesn't try hitting winners with the slice just Steffi set up her big forehand by slicing. So it's not important for her opponents to anticipate where she hit the slice.

*trying to think of a player that hits a down the line slice backhand *

hmmm, no luck.

Most players hit the slice backhand crosscourt, it's just more natural. Steffi hit it nearly every time crosscourt.

We are talking here about the defensive slice, not the approach shot that is hit down the line some times.

Wait, Tina Pisnik some times hits it down the line, but she doesn't hit a topspin or flat backhand so it has to be an ofensive shot for her.

Venus Williams plays against Justine's slice cross court backhand very well. Venus knows that she is going cross court so she wil l sneak into net and volley to open court before justine ever realises she is there at net. watch as open 2003 semis. u will see.and venus can make this play against juistine just about any time she really wants a quick point.
