Elena showed such bright promise this spring after turning 18. She had that great run to the Quarterfinals at Indian Wells, was a Finalist at Estoril, and reached the Quarters at s-hertogenbosch. Since these three tournaments are played on three different surfaces, I was pretty impressed and I expected Elena to keep rising, maybe to the top 25 or so by year's end.

So what happened? "Elena Part III" as I call her, has barely won a main-draw match since then.

Is it a reaction to increased attention or pressure? Have the other players figured out her game now? Doe she have that common Russian problem with choking?
Has she been injured?
WHAT IS IT???

Whatever the cause, I am concerned with this downward road because each successive loss must be more and more damaging to Elena's confidence. And she seems like such a great kid. I hope she can turn things around soon.

Janie .... she won today 6-1 6-3 and qualified.

About Elena ..... things were going well until San Diego when Venus destroyed her.

After that she's been struggling badly , just beating players she should win with ease.

I hope its just low confidence as that can be easily mended.
Elena for one doesn't put too much into her serve , she's a giant but doesn't use it to full effect.

And her game is too in-consistent at present , too many off-days.

I'm sure with experience and how hard she hits the ball , once it clicks into gear everything will work like clockwork.

And I'm not going back to help her .... got other things on my plate but would like to.

I saw Elena in Moscow last week and she was extremely slow. And her strokes aren't that powerful. I hope she'll keep on working.

Thanks for the in-person report, Julia!

I think she must be playing better this week, beating Alex Stevenson so handily; maybe she was just having a bad day when you saw her. I know she is not the fastest, but I keep hoping she will be the next Lindsay Davenport, who has done so well without any great speed around the court.
But it took Lindsay YEARS to develop the big serve that took her to the top. I just hope Elena has good coaching so she can improve these weaknesses over time.

Today it's Young against Old, as Elena and Daniela take on the venerable, and really wonderful, team of Amanda Coetzer and Lori McNeil. Since Lori is old enough to be Elena's and Daniela's Mom , it should be interesting!

I hope it's a great match; good luck to both teams! (Have Lori and Amanda already qualified for Munich? If so, then I can root for EB & DH more wholeheartedly!!)
