NEW HAVEN — In an intriguing match between rising young players, Russian Elena Bovina clipped Aussie qualifier Alicia Molik 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a Pilot Pen first-round match Monday on the Grandstand Court at the Connecticut Tennis Center.

Bovina, 20, played with the same type of confidence that propelled her into the quarterfinals of the Rogers AT&T Cup in Toronto last week.

Bovina, No. 17 in the WTA Tour rankings this week, was knocked out by eventual champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in straight sets.

Bovina will meet third-seeded Jennifer Capriati in the second round Wednesday.

Molik has had an uneventful summer. She has failed to advance past the second round in her last five tournaments, which include four first-round exits.

Both Bovina and Molik, however, will play in the U.S. Open next week.

Cara Black def. Rita Grande 6-2, 6-1

Black, from Zimbabwe, defeated Grande in a tournament for the second time in a week.

Black also beat the Italian at the Rogers AT&T Cup in three sets.

Black, better known for her doubles play and the sister of ATP Tour player Byron Black, will face fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the second round Wednesday.

Magui Serna def. Tina Pisnik 0-6, 6-4, 6-2

Serna rallied for the three-set win after failing to win a game in the opening set.

Serna defeated Pisnik in straight sets in the first round of the Rogers AT&T Cup last week.

Serna, a left-hander from Spain, will face the winner of today’s match between Tamarine Tanasugarn and sixth-seeded Magdelena Maleeva in the second round Thursday.
