Of course, that's just one woman's opinion. But it happens to be the most significant woman in the history of the sport.

the Williams' appearance at Fed Cup has symbolic value for American tennis, said Billie Jean King, former team captain and still passionate observer.

"They truly transcend our sport," King said on a recent visit to Philadelphia to promote World Team Tennis, which both sisters will play this summer. "It's so big, so great when they're playing well and enjoying life on the tour. It's the way they play, the star power. Also, the fact that they're women of color is important. It sends a great message for our sport that diversity is important, that multiculturalism is important. "There are so many positive messages. It's great that Serena has a lot of muscles and Venus is skinny because it's two different body types who bring so much. You can have different looks and still be good at what you do."

Well duh.
2 black sisters from inner city Compton bypassing juniors and end up dominating the sport for about 4yrs, with one winning all 4 slams in a row.
Of course they transcend the sport.

BJK, you are so smart

Transcending sports??

BJK's getting more metaphysical as the years pass by. Remember it's still entertainment!

As Jackie Robinson transcended baseball, as Ali transcended boxing, as Michael Jordan transcended basketball, so too the Williams sisters transcend tennis.

There are a lot of people out there that don't want to hear it, but it's true now and the passage of time will confirm it. :yeah:

A towering accomplishment indeed and history will certainly take note of it.........

Like a butterfly, just when adversaries figure they were over, they bounced back and continue to fly higher and higher. Sure, there are some out there who would rather see the WS accomplishments deleted from history if they have the power. Unfortunately for them, this phenomenon is unlike any other. Like a moving train or hurricane, the WS saga is destined for its place in the annals of tennis.

IMHO, perpetual hating on the sisters cannot and will not reverse the course of history.

One thread on this board is dissing Billie Jean for insisting that Jennifer Capriati act like every other Fed Cup team member and leave her coach at home, while this thread is praising her for her respect of the Williams' sisters.

Things that make you go "hmmmm..."

My Mom spanked me for bad behavior and hugged me because she loves me.

Funny how people can be so complex. ;)

BJK didn't say they didn't have to follow her rules to be on her Fed Cup team...

...seems like you're in the apples and oranges room going "hmmmm..." :p
