EVERETT, NANCY (Nancy Evelyn Everett)
Australia
Born in 1905 in Armidale, New South Wales
Died in 1967 in Guyra, New South Wales
Married Geoffrey Lyford Mackenzie on 5 October 1927 in Saint Bartholomew's Church, Ollera, New South Wales
[Active circa 1925-30]

This player's first name is spelt ‘Nancye’ in some sources. Geoffrey Mackenzie and his brother Roderick were also lawn tennis players, and were probably the first cousins of another player, Edith Mackenzie, who had married yet another player, Jack Snape, earlier in 1927.

From ‘The Armidale Express and New England General Advertiser’, October 11, 1927:

Wedding – Mackenzie-Everett

Two old pastoral families of New England were brought closer together on Wednesday afternoon, when the marriage was celebrated at the delightful old church, Saint Bartholomew’s, Ollera, of Nancye, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A.W. [Arthur and Alice] Everett, ‘Ollera’, Guyra, to Geoffrey, eldest son of Mr and Mrs C.L. [Charles and Mabel] Mackenzie, of ‘Tenterden’, Guyra. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Harris, B.A., in the presence of a large number of friends of the parties and their relatives. The church was exquisitely decorated with arun lilies, white watsonia and giant maiden-hair fern. The wedding bell was formed from pink and white sweet peas. Miss Mayled presided at the organ.

The bride, who was given away by her father, chose soft white satin with Vandyke flouncings of wide Chantilly lace. Her veil was of white tulle, with a wreath of orange blossoms, and she a carried a lovely bouquet of pale pink and white flowers, with silver streamers. She was attended by Mrs Jack [Edith] Snape, as Maid of Honour, and Misses Gladys Crouch and Jill Mackenzie. Master Dick Curtis acted as page.

Mrs Snape wore pink floral georgette, with hat to tone, while Misses Crouch and Mackenzie chose mauve and cream floral georgette. Mr Roderick Mackenzie was best man, and Mr Forbes Robertson-Cunningham, groomsman.

The one hundred and twenty guests were received by the bride’s mother in the large dining-room. Mrs [Alice] Everett wore black satin, with old rose trimming, and a black hat, with roses. She also carried a delightful bouquet. Mrs Mackenzie was attired in black and white georgette, with black hat and a white feather. The billiard table was simply packed with most beautiful presents, and cheques aggregating over 400 pounds.

Mr and Mrs Mackenzie will reside at Guyra.

HOLTON, AMY
United States
Born 05 April 1965
Married Rob Lyons
[Active 1982-1987]

From Dayton, Ohio, moved with her family to Florida in her youth specifically so they could play tennis outdoors. They settled in Sarasota. Sister Kathy was also a tennis pro, the two playing doubles at times.

Ranked #100 in 1983, her only year-end finish in the top 100. 3rd round at 1983 and 1984 French Opens were her best results in majors.

Her most memorable match was playing Martina Navratilova on Centre Court in the first round at Wimbledon in 1984.

[From the New York Times]

Miss Holton is one of the legion of blond baseliners with two-fisted backhands, but today she also demonstrated a driving forehand and effective return of service that took Miss Navratilova by surprise.

''With a 128 draw, there's a good chance you'll play someone you haven't seen before,'' Miss Navratilova said. ''All I knew was she was a baseliner with a two-handed backhand, and I said to myself, 'No problem,' but she played a great match.''

Miss Holton's best moment, despite the intrusion of some luck, was the 10th game of the second set. Two net- cord shots helped her to a 15-40 lead on Miss Navratilova's serve and then a double fault gave her the break for 5-5. Just then the courtside clock showed that the match had exceeded an hour. The last player to extend Miss Navratilova that long was Sherry Acker in 1983. Chris Evert Lloyd, in 1982, was the last to win a set from her here.

''I never thought I could win, and now I'm mad at myself,'' Miss Holton said after Miss Navratilova had broken serve for 6-5 and run out the match with a love game that included a galloping overhead, a tidy volley and an ace

She is now a mom with two sons.

"An enormously gifted player" and "a puzzlingly erratic player are apt descriptions of this enigmatic blonde A natural looking player with fluid strokes, especially off the backhand. Bettina was a citizen of the world. Born in Switzerland, she was the ladies champion of Peru at age 13, lived in Miami, had German citizenship, and after achieving success moved to Monte Carlo!

Her father was a German diplomat and her mother a Peruvian.

1982 was her banner year. The blonde German reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and won 3 events: Houston the German Open, and Tokyo.

Early in 1983 she won Oakland indoors. This led to her career high ranking at #6 in March of 1983. At this point she noticed she was losing her hearing and sense of balance. Taking time off, Bettina had an operation to correct an inner ear infection later in the year. She was at sea for most of 1984 and 1985.

Bettina recovered somewhat in 1986 with a quarterfinal result at Wimbledon, but never again got close to the top ten as she had in 1982 and 1983. She played only 1 event in in 1988.

She was very stylish to watch. Bunge could do anything on the backhand, having the ability to slice, top it, or hit flat through the ball. One poster wrote that "Her slice backhand was amazing and seemed to hiss while going over the net, and all her shots were smooth and beautiful, as was her movement." A very good volley enhanced her arsenal and helps explain why she was best indoors and on grass.

Bunge was regularly voted one of the sexiest female pros in fan polls of the 1980s. A thread on one site calls her a "hottie." Her poster adorned many walls in the early 80s.

She had a temper. In 1981 she was so upset with herself and line calls that she stomped off the court when losing 6-7 7-5 5-0 to Pam Shriver at the Canadian Open.
