AUFERMANN, MARIE (nee Marie Schultz)

Born circa 1880 in New York City
Died ???? [alive and residing in Manhattan in 1946]
Married (1) Walter A (or CW) Aufermann by 1906
Married (2) Ludwig Kast (1877-1941) on 11 February 1928.
Name variant: sometimes incorrectly spelled "Auffermann"

Mrs Aufermann played for the Staten Island C. C and the Richmond CC. She participated in the 1908 US Nationals.

Daughter of Carl H Schultz, a German immigrant from Prussia. Schultz made his fortune producing mineral water, and was at one point the largest artificial mineral water producer in the world. As the 9th of 11 children (and one of 7 daughters), Marie had no direct involvement in the company other than dividends, but financial mismanagement by her two brothers led to a flurry of lawsuits starting in 1912. The business went bankrupt in 1929.

Her former home in providence, Rhode Island at One Eggers Court has been restored.

Marie's 2nd husband was scientist Ludwig Kast, a friend of world renowned scientist Albert Einstein.

YI, JING-QIAN (Jing-Qian Yi)
China
Born 28 February 1974 in Nanjing, China
Married Xin Xu (who was also her coach)
Height: 1.68 m (5′ 6″)
Plays:Right Handed (Double Handed Backhand)
[Active 1991-2001]

China's first woman in the top 100 in the 1990s, presaging the success of Na Li and other Chinese women in the 21st century. Her favorite surface was hard courts.

Yi was handpicked at the age to play tennis in her hometown of Jiangsu. Only 8 years old, not only had she never picked up a tennis racquet, she had never even heard of the sport. The selectors chose her for speed of foot.

First came to notice late in 1995-making finals of back to back lower tier events in Pattaya and Surabaya and ending the year #91 on the computer. Yi next made headlines in upsetting Jennifer Capriati at the 1996 French Open. These results propelled her to #69 in July of 1996, her highest ever ranking.

Yi was singled out by a sports instructor at age 8 in Nanjing and told to focus on tennis because, said Yi, ''I ran fast. It was not my choice. I didn't know what tennis was.''

By 1991, she had learned enough to turn professional, although professionalism in China is not quite the same as professionalism in the West. ''I keep 35 percent of my prize money,'' said Yi, who won 70,000 French francs ($13,460) for reaching the second round. ''Fifty percent goes to the government and 15 percent to the tennis federation.''--International Tribune article from 1996.
2000 was the only year she made the main draw at all 4 majors. By the end of the year she was ranked #96, only her second year-end ranking inside the top 100.
