BAILLEUL, LOUISE, Marquise de (Louise-Marie-Madeleine De Brettes-Thurin)
France
Born 12 April 1865
Died ????
Married Jean Paul De Bailleul on 07 July 1887
[Active 1893-1897]

The Marquise de entered the first French Championships in 1897. She lost to eventual champion Adine Masson 6-0 6-2. The French source listed below indicates she was active as early as 1893 as member of the Societe de Sport on the Ile de Puteaux. Other French sources refer to a marquis and Marquise de Baileul, making it likely that the use of "de Bailleut" by the American Official Bulletin of Lawn Tennis is an error.

In the 1890s the Marquise of Bailleul was nee Louise Marie Madeleine de Brettes-Thurin, born 12 April 1865. Her husband was Jean Paul de Bailleul, born in 1862. Her age makes it possible she was the tennis player under discussion here.

Their 2 children were:

Hélène Jeanne de Bailleul 1888-1936 married 8 November 1919 (Saturday), Paris, to Henri Veyre de Soras 1891-1972
M Joseph Raymond de Bailleul, marquis de Bailleul 1892/1893-1968

PFEFFEL, YVONNE de
France
Born 30 July 1883 in Paris, France
Died 1957 in Truro, Cornwall, England
[Active in 1905-1907]

In 1905, Kate Gillou defeated Yvonne de Pfeffel, 6-0, 11-9 at the Closed French Championships. Kate was more than likely the defending champion. Yvonne de Pfeffel was one of two lawn tennis-playing sisters, the other being Marie-Louise de Pfeffel. Their parents Baron Hubert de Pfeffel and Helene Arnous-Riviere were German-born, hence the occurrence of "von Pfeffel" in some sources.

Yvonne won the French Mixed Doubles with Max Decugis in 1905 and 1906 as well as the doubles with Adine Masson in 1907.

PFEFFEL, MARIE-LOUISE de
France/Great Britain
Born 15 August 1882 in Paris, France
Died 29 November 1944 in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, England
Married Stanley Fred Williams, 24 January 1906 in Paris, France
[Active in 1904]

Marie-Louise participated in the 1904 Wimbledon Championships. Could she also be the Mrs Williams who played Wimbledon in 1914? It is a remote possibility.

Marie-Louise was the sister of Yvonne de Pfeffel, who also played lawn tennis in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Their German-born father was Christian Hubert Freiherr von Pfeffel, a "freiherr" being a baron. He moved to France at some point and died in Paris. Marie-Louise and Yvonne could probably have styled themselves as baronesses. Their mother, Hélène (née Arnous-Rivière), appears to have been French.

Her daughter Irene Eileen Williams born in 1907.

She is the great grandmother of Boris Johnson, the Socialist Mayor of London.

FLORAND, Mme [nee ????]
France
Married Florand by 1922

She was in the doubles at the French Nationals in 1922. Madame Florand was still entering events as late as 1926-for she was in the doubles draw at the French Open that year but defaulted her first scheduled match.

A Mme Florand was also prominent in gold at this time. Could they be the same person?

Her name is often rendered as Mme Florent.
