Here in the US, we don't really have what I would call a good tennis magazine. Out of the ones I've been getting in recent years, I thought (the now defunct) Tennis Match was the best.
Tennis (10 issues/yr) should actually be called Tennis Lite. As mentioned, way too many ads. Also, lots of space devoted to resorts, etc. Almost nothing in the way of tournament coverage. (About a page worth in the back of each issue.) Website: http://www.tennis.com
Tennis Week (was 20 issues/yr, may be down to 16 now) likes to bill itself as the magazine for the "serious tennis enthusiast". They do have singles draw sheets for all events on both main tours, as well as the tour schedules and top 200 singles rankings at press time. But the rest of their coverage leaves a lot to be desired. Their most prolfic writer, Andrea Leand, is the worst writer in tennis. (And if you know my opinion of tennis writers in general, that's bad.) She specializes in the feature article that mentions poor treatment of the subject by anonymous "other players". The whole magazine tends to have a pro-men/anti-women slant. For example, the Fed Cup finals, even with the U.S. involved, is lucky if it gets a few photos on a single page. No articles. Davis Cup gets multiple pages of coverage, even without the U.S. Since I've started getting Notes & Netcords 6½ years ago, I've seen numerous positive happenings and stats about women's tennis that never made the pages of Tennis Week. Even their website, http://www.tennisweek.com , never made any mention of the WTA joining in the "Auction for America". Rubin's sponsorship (and rescue) of 5 tournaments got a one-sentence blurb in the back; the same size as one to announce a journeyman player signing with a small racquet brand. They have underlisted the prize money for the women's tournaments all year long. (That's nothing new. For most of the season after the tour and Virginia Slims parted ways, they listed the rankings as "Virginia Slims rankings".) They leave most of the women's event telecasts out of their TV listings. They can't get through an entire article about women's tennis without saying something negative. There has not been one article about the women's tour or any of its players, however short, that was completely positive, in a long, long time.
We desperately need a good tennis mag here.
