I saw many matches this year, but in terms of quality, intensity, shotmaking I think one match, which was played by two players I am not fan of, impressed me incredibly. Roddick-Hewitt at US Open. Overhyped Sampras-Agassi match there was , I think, not even in the same league.

2 matches spring to mind

At US Open ..... the match between Max Mirnyi and Gustavo Kuerten was absolutely amazing , nearly 4 hours of tennis and only 38 UE's in total .

Guga had 10 UE's and he was 2 sets down says it all.

but the match that had it all.

Wimbledon Final
Goran Ivanisevic v Pat Rafter

this match had it all , 5 sets , roller-coaster and intense drama and the crowd there was something else , no where else has seen those scenes, pretty hair-raising stuff.
And to see those kinda scenes at Wimbledon was just amazing.

I agree with TBE, that the best match was Goran vs Rafter. I dont think I'll live long enough to see a Wimbledon final that good again. It had everything.

A few other notables:
1. Federer df Sampras at Wimbledon: if only Federer hadn't gotten injured in the summer, his little coming out party here might have had a little more meaning It was a decent match in terms of quality, however I just enjoyed it more cause i like an upset. That, and I had sort of predicted Federer might win

2. Ferrero df Guga at Rome: in my opinion this was the best match on clay this year. Granted, I am a bit biased

3. Clement df Grosjean at Oz: despite that fact that Grosjean chokedtwo match points..it was still full of a lot of great shot making. Its fun watching these two play.

There are more that you guys already mentioned

Becca compleately agree with you what you said about Federer. Without the injury who knows where he would be now!

So yes my favorite is Federer bt Sampras at Wimbledon too.

Right behind the Wimbledon final between Goran and Pat. (Still can't decide wether I'm sad that Pat lost or happy that Goran won. Both really would have deserved the title.)

Sampras d. Agassi @ US Open. It was really fun to watch. What a ride..I never knew who would eventually win. I have it on tape, but I don't usually watch it because it can get a little annoying to relive, (i mean, 4 tiebreaks!!)

Kuerten d. Myrni @ US Open. I remember watching the beginning of this match and think it would be an easy win for Guga. But after I flipped channels and came back, I saw Guga was a set down!! Then another set!! I always knew in the back of my mind that Guga would pull it out in the end. What heartbreak for Max!

Roddick d. Chang @ Roland Garros. Wow. My first real glimpse of Roddick and Chang and they both impressed me. I can't say I really care for Roddick anyways, but still, that match was great.

i could have SWORN ive posted in this thread before

1)ferrero df guga in rome. #1 vs #2 clay courter, and so on...

2)guga dft mirnyi us open has been commentated on before

3) mirnyi dft guga ON CLAY, at i forgot. but max won guga on clay!!!!! serve and volley on clay beating guga nonetheless

max also beat pete in stuttgart and that was great to watch, in the beginning commentators were so dissin max by not giving him a chance. but hte big serve and volleyer beat the ghetto serve and volleyer. max whooped him 4 and 2, really putting pete in his place and im sure its that match that gave max the confidence to beat yevgeny later.

haas df mirnyi in stuttgart, seriously, haas did no wrong in this match. sucks to see max lose... but max played very well, haas was just "God"-ly in his play and theres nothing that can be done. i dont think he would have lost to anyone in the whole world that match. it was really heart breaking/ great tennis.

4)clavet dft norman, forgot the tournament again maybe it was 2000 but im almost 100% sure it was this year. norman had played an increidbly long match before this against hrbaty i believe and barely pulled it out that morning. then he played clavet, who has that nasty lefty hook and is a blast to watch. and of course magnus is in my top 3 favs. too bad magnus lost. but it was really great because it was a battle with the underdog winning
my numbers are messed up because i added those oens after the inital 4. but yorue over it

NejedlyKanepi : Is weird! With all these good results, Mirnyi isn't yet at the top 10, isn't this weird?

Meligeni vs Agassi Roland Garros : The match that the brazilians were expecting from the finals in Roland Garros 1999, when Meligeni lost to Medvedev... Meligeni fought, and made a good show for the french people, even Agassi said he played with his heart

Kuerten vs Russel Roland Garros : Oh My God to this match! I was sleeeping when it happend! Thank God I didn't saw! And also Thanks God Guga won, saving 3 match points !!!

Kuerten vs Mirnyi USOpen : WOW What a fantastic match! Max didn't give up, giving only trouble to Guga, that could find his control, and knew who to close the match...

Ferrero vs Kuerten Rome : Good match also, like Becca said the best match on clay. After Kuerten vs Russel

Greg vs Kuerten AUSOpen : The best Men's match of the tournament IMO.... Good quality of tennis, Guga answering Greg's bombs of serve, and good points of highlights

If only there was bonus points for wins , Max would be so much higher.

yes hes beat guga not once, TWICE!!!!! and of course he almost beat him at the us open. that match was so good they had to get yevgeny to help them commentate

magnus norman

pete sampras

marat safin

kafelnikov TWICE

hes also beaten the rusedskis the pavels the schalkens, the novaks, arazis, schuettlers, bjorkmans, costas, piolines, and other very very good players.

so hes had a great year. too bad his game isnt THAT compatible on clay, like hte 1 match on clay he won this year was against guga. hehehehe.
why doesnt atp have something similar to quality points?? they used to have them didnt they? dont tell me they have an age restriction rule as well...

Goran v Pat -Wimbledon final, just so much drama, everything about it was great, what with the atmosphere, even Goran's double faults at match point which almost killed me!!. The best Wimbledon final and to make it even better Goran finally did it!

Greg v Guga- Aussie Open, such a high quality match, and such a surprise as well, I thought at the start of it, that Greg would get hammered, but to comeback from the year he'd had, to produce a result like that was superb. The best match of the tournament by a mile.

Pete v Andre- US Open, the standard was tremendous, and it shows that serve volleyer against baseline, is the best type of match there is. Shame that this wasn't the final.

Guga v Max- Yet again the serve volleyer against baseliner, Max played like a brick wall at the net, got everything back, one of these occasions that no one deserved to lose.

When I saw this topic, there was on answer clearly in my mind:

US Open 2001 Quarter Final
Agassi vs. Sampras
Sampras win at 6/7 7/6 7/6 7/6

No service games being broken, the match just being settled in 4 tie breaks!! The qualities of both players during that match... wow.. how can I describe?? Just AWESOME!!! Simply the best!!

But the match I love to watch the most is Kafelnikov vs. Ferrero at the Sydney Masters Cup!! Becoz' they are my two favourite male tennis players, and the match was very close where both of them producing lots of good tennis!!!
