Watching Vondrousova against Putinseva today got me thinking about which current player has the best drop shot?
I’m sure I will have missed some ..

Kenin's not been relevant recently enough for me to have a strong opinion about it.

Jabeur's is very good, but she overuses it - that's how Rybakina beat her at Wimbledon, by clocking the dropshot Jabeur went to so often.

Sabalenka's isn't a great shot, but it's effective and she gets away with it often because of how deep she forces opponents, and she's judicious with it.

Vekic's is ugly and obvious, but often effective for similar reasons to Sabalenka, but she goes to it too often, especially when she's flagging, and it can turn into a bail out shot.

Vondrousova's is excellent, especially on clay, but she occasionally overuses it, especially on hard courts.

Putintseva is perhaps as good as Vondrousova's from a technical POV, and she's far more judicious, so I'm going with her.

Because she hadn’t played singles in years and doesn’t use it in her doubles

I've been so impressed with Sabs' feel on hers, especially considering she's only incorporated the dropshot into her game in the last year.

Ons probably has the most skill and variety, but I'm giving it to Marketa - she disguises it so well and it's incredible how close to the net she can place it.

I honestly wasn’t going to put Sabalenka in this list as it is such a recent addition to her game but set 2 of the AO final and the way she uses them have been pretty high profile successful!

’Best’ can mean a lot of things - technically perfect? Judiciously used? Lowest bounce/spin applied. For me Ons has the best hands but are they always used at the right time? I went Vondrousova in the end as she seems to manage to drop them over the net so they hardly bounce so often.

When she's in the mood Clara Tauson's dropshots are in the superior class too, both because she can, and does, use them basically from all distances and angles - at the net or even disquised from close to baseline too - and because they are a constant reminder to the opponent that you can't just expect the heavy artillery in return.
Clara's problem isn't what she's able to, but ... it's in her mind.
