Winning with 25 DFs. :spit: Jelena‘s serve is still a liability, but Karo was not serving very well either and Jelena sometimes looked like her former self of the ground. Her highlights reel would once again be outstanding. :inlove: Her shotmaking remains one of the most pleasing of all times to me. When she is clicking it is just a sight to see!

Karo  Looked quite listless and mainly benefited from whatever Jelena was offering. Did not do enough herself and her passive play did not cut it whenever Jelena stayed sharp.

Re: Beijin R1: Jelena Ostapenko (wc) d. Karolina Pliskova (2) 7-5 3-6 7-5

Embarrassing from Pliskova.

Jelena served at 49% first serve rate and made 25 DFs and Pliskova still lost. Was bullied off the ground, just effortlessly forced off into defense and then Jelena would hit a winner. If not for Ostapenko's terrible serving she would be out in jiffy. Jelena also had way more BP chances (24, vs 9) but just had trouble converting them.

The worst part is Ostapenko will probably now lose her next match.

What a performance from Ostapenko!
She just lost to Zavatska in Tashkent... and now she won against Pliskova

Both players should be embarrassed really. Jelena needs to do something about her serve. She could've won this 61 62 without all the double faults.
Karo was a mess.

Well, you can't say Jelena didn't make use of her wildcard! Siniakova seems like a winnable second round, too.

I don't think Pliskova was really up for playing Ostapenko today after losing to a peaking ballbasher less than a week ago, but it's still embarrassing for the world #2 to lose to someone with 25 double faults. Totally void of ideas on how to beat Jelena off the ground.

6 games worth of DFs donated by Ostapenko and she still wins the match. :worship: Your fave could never.

It's hilarious how Ostapenko just toys with Pliskova from the baseline. Her groundstrokes are so lethal and everytime she gets into a rally you'd favour her to win it more often than not. If only she had a reliable serve, this match-up would probably be close to NID category imo since she returns + hits groundies much better than Pliskova. Pliskova's movement just gets so thoroughly exposed with the laser-like, precise strokes from Aljona.

With a decent serve this match would probably have ended something like 2&2 for Aljona or similar.

It was quite funny to see Pliskova only generating so few BPs especially with Ostapenko serving under 50% and hitting 25 DFs. She only had 9 BPs, compared to 24 for Ostapenko. :spit:

I don't know if this result says more about Pliskova or Ostapenko right now... but clearly Aljona needs it more. She'll probably flop to Katka in the next round though.

Penko played well off the ground, when she getting her 1st serve she was great. But all these DFs, girl...Pliskova really didn't care tbh Zhengzhou was enough and she's confirmed for Shenzhen so, yeah. Plus her record in China is pretty awful.

Very rare first round loss for Pliskova. Though Pliskova is supposedly a big hitter she doesn't really hit with that much pace. She got overpowered by Yastremska and now Ostapenko. Penko... so many DFs! Despite the win, if Penko plays like this she isn't going far.

Pliskova's game is super overrated. I'll give her points for the serve action and her "mental toughness" plus relative consistency, but when she get crushed, she gets crushed and looks totally helpless out there. Only Ostapenko's unsteady serving made this at all a contest.

Kaja should be ashamed of losing to 25 DFs having a serve like she possesses. And Ostapenko probably is never gonna fix her joke serve because why if you can beat No.2 player with 25 DFs, right?
