England football captain David Beckham and his wife Victoria have bought a £1.5m holiday home in southern France.

The Beckhams, who already have a luxury mansion in Hertfordshire and a penthouse in Manchester, have finalised the deal for the luxury 19th century estate in Bargemon, Provence.

Set in 250 acres of meadows and forest, the red-roofed Domaine Saint-Vincent has its own private pool, a separate four-bedroom barn conversion, a chapel and vineyard.

A 30-minute drive from the Mediterranean resort of St Tropez, the Beckhams are expected to use their third house for summer holidays with their two young sons, Brooklyn, four, and seven-month-old Romeo.

The property lies next to a military camp and is surrounded by a walled garden, to give the family maximum privacy.

Known for the fine climate and pure water, the medieval village of Bargemon boasts a 12th century church, shaded squares and picturesque narrow streets.

Olive-oil mills and honey producers can also be found in the rural area around the village.

David, 28, recently dismissed rumours that he is planning a move from Manchester United to join Real Madrid in Spain.

The new house is therefore expected to be more useful as a base for visiting their friend Elton John at his nearby home, than as an escape from the Spanish capital.

Local residents were reported to be as thrilled to hear of their new neighbours as the couple were delighted to have finally found their dream holiday home.

The local mayor Pierre Blanc, told the Daily Express newspaper that someone famous had bought the villa.

Although coy about naming names he said: "We are a friendly town and we will treat any newcomers the same, no matter who they are."

A spokesman for the Beckhams confirmed they had bought to property but was unable to give any further details
