An advertisement asking you to fix your registry, do not click any buttons on it (not no or cancel or any on the add). If it doesn't let you close it with the x button do ctrl-alt-delete and delete the add, otherwise you will gain a trojan horse if your antivirus doesn't catch it. Luckily mine did...

I've moved this thread to where Amanda's more likely to see it.

Is this a pop-up you're seeing? And can you give any more info about the origin (name of the alleged service)?

For the record, it's NEVER a good idea to hit either "ok" or "cancel" to close pop-ups or ads like that, no matter where you're surfing.

You might also want to download a program like Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.spybot.info/), restart you computer in safe mode, and run the scan. That should clear out any spyware or other crap that things like this are glomming onto.

We have been made aware of spyware possibly being distributed via an agency on WTAworld.com. This is being investigated by our abuse team.

We are working with our partners to ensure these ads are not being distributed to users of the WTAworld.com website. Ads of this nature are not tolerated across our network under any circumstances.

If you see this advertisement, it would be extremely useful if you can tell us which site it's being spawned from. This will enable us to more quickly track down the rogue network/advertiser responsible and take immediate preventative action to bring this to a close.

If you have any information that will assist our team, we urge you to use the following link to contact our team:

Rest assured, we are working to bring this investigation to a satisfactory end as quickly as possible. We thank you for your assistance in this matter.

The most common virus which comes from these ads are the Trojan.Desktophijack virus.

While a low-threat virus, it modifies the hosts file to block access to certain search engines, changes your registry, and permanently changes your desktop to show that your computer has been infected with spyware.

The best possible thing to do is to keep your anti-spyware updated and report anything out of the ordinary.

It's also very difficult to track down exactly where these ads have been delivered from as the actual software may not immediately be installed on your computer. We are investigating this thoroughly but as of now we have yet to see any real evidence this spyware is coming from an agency partner of this site.

Also install AVG free edition and always keep it "on" along with Microsoft Antispyware (they should be visible icons for these in your "tray" ) or best switch to Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. :)
