Lucia Kurkova def. Karla Herrera-Q 4-6 7-6(4) 7-6(0)

This match has been one of the thougest of my life. I was scared to play Gisele or Karla because they are great players. Karla is a great fighter she hits all the balls down and i was lucky to win this one. In the next round i play against Marteena, i'm pretty excited about this match, because i have been losing with lower ranked players during the season and i love to play against the likes of Larissa,Martina... I can promise it will be a great match. HEJA LUCIA! :D

Gianna  I am so disappointed, I'm on a big slump now.

Well done Anabel, you are officially 4-0 career vs. Gianna! Good luck vs. Ferrer!

"This was such a tense match as Anabel and I are former doubles partners and friends. I am disappointed that I wasted many opportunities to win the match but Anabel played well on the big points and was able to close out the match. I commend her for her good play. I wish her well in the rest of the tournament. Thanks."

GISELE DEVASTATED

The cuban's negative streak has increased after her qualifyings' loss to Karla Herrera. The second seed.

"I could have done so much better." said Noventz. "It was pathetic. Simply pathetic. I shouldn't even came"

After a tough first set, Noventz, who's former number 9th, won in 6-2. Then on the third set, everything was even until Herrera broke Noventz' serve, and held her serve to make 5-3. With chances of saving herself from a loss, Noventz wasted them, ending then, her journey in Stanford.

"I'm blowing my chances. I'm so much better than that. I don't know what's going on" said Noventz. "I could have easily win it. I played stupid. Plain stupid."

Lindsay Sarile smiles towards the reporters during a meeting with the press after her straight-set victory over the always dangerous veteran Caroline Whitten, winning 7-6(5), 6-0.

"That was definitely a difficult match to get through to. Caroline is very solid all-around, not making a lot of mistakes and is capable in any part of the court. That first set was especially a hummdinger. I thought she could have taken it if she hadn't made those few errors."

Sarile next faces another veteran, Ruflina Taliamanasoko from Botswana. Taliamanasoko recently lost her husband, Tobias Applegate to a car accident.

"I don't think anybody can do or say anything that could comfort somebody who has lost someone she loves. I applaud her for continuing to play on the tour though I had hoped that she rest and recuperate for her sake."

"Nevertheless, being the champion that she is, she will keep on giving her best out there. I will have to, too."

Taliamanosoko loses in lopsided return

On her first singles match since the death of her husband, Ruflina Taliamanosoko lost to Lindsay Anne Sarile 6/2 6/4 in what was one of the most one-sided matches of the Botswanian's career.

I haven't even stepped on a court since Palermo, but that's not my reason for losing. I have a tremendous fighting spirit, but Lindsay was very determined today to make the most of it and win.

Asked about how her grieving process went and her decision to withdraw from Fed Cup, Ruflina flinched.

You know, I'm still in shock and don't know what to say. My main concern is the two of the three children I have lost their father. That is devestating to me. I had to be with them after the death. I could not go to Indonesia for Fed Cup. I needed my children as well. They have helped me.

Taliamanosoko now goes into doubles with Jane Wong at Stanford then it's a trip home to San Diego. Jane has been my best friend throughout this whole ordeal. She came home to San Diego then left the night before her Fed Cup tie started. She was so tired and did not perform well in Fed Cup. That is a true friend. But after doubles, I'm going to La Costa, which is my home. It will be so nice to play and be at home too.
