Britain's top female tennis player, Elena Baltacha, has been given a wild card entry to next month's Australian Open.
It is a huge boost to Baltacha, who has suffered an injury-blighted year, and was recently diagnosed with liver problems.

"I'm really thrilled because I've never been to Australia before and it's a good chance to get off to a new start," Baltacha says in the Guardian.

"I don't feel any pressure whatsoever and I haven't set any goals for next year."

Baltacha reached the third round at Wimbledon this year, beating number 32 seed Amanda Coetzer before losing to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva.

Baltacha also won two senior titles last year and made huge strides up the world rankings.

So it is true....this is really surprising! Was it a recent deal struck between the two nations? I have heard nothing of this.

Anyway, good for Elena I guess, but I beg the question...will there be any wildcards left for Australian players?

Out of all the slams, the Aussie Open will now be the one where the local players get shafted the most.

Well, on the other hand Australian players are good on grass and now I think one of them will get a WC in Wimbledon (At last they realized giving away 8 WC to British is useless while only 2 or 3 are worth of having one...)

has Tennis Australia said anything about this or are they keeping it quiet ???

I found it pretty strange too that they gave a WC to another overseas player (that makes 3 out of 8)

Australia open to Baltacha

The British No1 Elena Baltacha has accepted a wild card for next month's Australian Open, a positive if surprising end to a year bedevilled by health problems, which have only recently been diagnosed.

"I'm really thrilled because I've never been to Australia before and it's a good chance to get off to a new start," the 19-year-old said yesterday.

"I don't feel any pressure whatsoever and I haven't set any goals for next year. I've been ill for so long that it's really about getting fit again as much as anything. I am just so happy to be playing at all."

Baltacha is slowly recovering from liver damage, caused by heavy doses of antibiotics intended to treat chronic tonsillitis. "It's such a relief to know what it was because it affected me very badly," she said.

Having had her tonsils removed last month and with regular tests on her liver, she appears to be on the road to recovery at last, and will head for Australia next week to prepare.

Despite her problems last year Baltacha reached the third round at Wimbledon and won two tournaments. "She's done bloody well to do as well as she has done," said her coach Alan Jones

bit of a shocker.

Bally will play Auckland and Canberra along with Ahl, Pullin and Keothavong if they all make it in.

Shame they didn't give it to Lucie coz she was ace here last year, but i am totally biased.

bit of a kick in the face for Lucie and Julie who have worked their but off and have been given nothing in return.

Hope Bally can make good use of it, coz otherwise she will have missed a big oppertunity to leap up teh rnaks by winning a couple of qualy rounds.

Yay for Anne though, there wasn't anyone else they could of given it to.

you must be kidding
no point giving them a WC, they've been trying to qualify for the last 100 yrs and only managed to do it once between them in all slams outside Wimby.
