Such a random H2H stat that Angie has convincingly won all of their meetings on clay of all surfaces, only to struggle so much with Cornet on the faster ones. Cornet is certainly capable on the grass though, today she was fired up, good mix of offense/defense, good returning as usual. Angie was a bit flat and low on energy, way too many casual errors, impatience creeping in and serve clearly a lot weaker than yesterday (probably due to Cornet's strong presence in her service games). Pretty tough conditions out there for both of them, a hot day in Bad Homburg, but Angie could never really get going.
I didn't watch the first, but Cornet was close to her best and most entertaining in the 2nd and 3rd sets. Not always in terms of execution (dropshots), but she was more aggressive, played some great slices, especially FH slice returns. She was anticipating and reading Kerber's shots so well.
She missed few opportunities early in the 2nd and somehow Keber, who was just okay overall, ran away with the set. Cornet again played better early in the 3rd and didn't waste her chances this time. Kerber started missing a bit more. Both sets were actually closer than the scoreline would suggest.
Conditions where Alize produces her best tennis: centre court, higher ranked opponent, against the crowd She will be one of the most unpleasant R1 draws for anyone at Wimbledon. For Angie maybe it's even better to to focus and save the energy. Still think she could be one of the main contenders for Wimbledon title/final.
