Okay here’s the new thread for the clay season. I was on holiday and therefore couldn’t make it earlier. Anyways just in time before her first match on clay since 2016. She’s only played 3 matches in the past 3 months and her last match already dates back to more than a month ago. Expect a lot of rust and mess.

And hopefully this thread is not only made for 3 matches again. I understand she’s in a difficult situation right now, but come on...

Lost a very competitive, very tight 5-7, 4-6. Played well; actually the better player in the first set. Lack of recent match play made up the difference, I think. Obvious a loss is a loss is a loss and right now wins are very much required, but a very encouraging performance.

Good start into the match and a 5-3 lead but not surprising that she was not able to make the crucial points in the end, she just needs more matches to get a better rhythm and to get more confidence for the important moments, not sure where she plays next, some W25 tournaments would be nice for a change but I highly doubt that :p

She is ALT 25 on the EL for W80 Dothan but MDO, so no chance to make it there unless she gets a WC

She played well but panicked when it got to the important stage. Many good serves in the first set (she served worse later) and a number of good forehands. But then things got tight towards the end of the set... Also a lot of timing issues on her backhand. Kenin did absolutely nothing and just made less errors. She won't win many matches if she keeps on competing in one tournament every four weeks.

Only watched a few games in first set, rather solid performance.

Imagining her playing like that at some ITF events, she should be able to win matches, but of course she just doesn't do that...

At this point it's just sad seeing her waste so much time waiting for a miracle run.
Nothing against taking WTA WC's, all for it, but for fucks sake play as much turnaments as possible for once.

She actually started really well until 5-3 and serving for the set...then everything and esp. her serve started to crumble. From there on you just knew there’s no way in hell she’d ever win the match. A little revival at 0-2 in the second set after losing 6 games in a row, but it wasn’t enough. So clear she lacked match practice.. She had a W/UE of 30/20 and there are certainly positives from the match, but she won’t profit and build from it if she keeps playing 1 match per month.

The MDO at Dothan really makes no sense at all. She’s so far off MD that even a miracle won’t help. Let’s wait and see how her schedule will be, hopefully not only sitting and waiting for WCs for WTA events. I really hope that she’ll play more than 1 match per month...otherwise it’s also useless to create separate threads for each surface...

Sabine

5-3 -> 5-7 0-2 ! :eek:
That was typical nervous Sabine.
Kenin on the other hand showed mental strength.

Sabine played well until 5-3. She howed her big talent, played nice aggressive tennis (even smart too), overpowering Kenin. But then when serving for the set at 5-3, became nervous, made some easy UEs and collapsed.

I forgot how strong and powerful her game is (especially serve and forehand).

Sabine also had nothing to lose/no pressure. That helped to play better at the beginning. Until the first pressure situation at 5-3 of course. We have seen this (collapse under pressure) so many times with Sabine ...
And we all know Sabine plays better against higher ranked players.

Sabine must play more tournaments. She needs less breaks and more matches.
Also in my opinion a good coach would help her too.

PS: Kenin said some nice words about Sabine in the after-match interview on Tennis Channel. She also said she was cheering for Sabine in the Wimbledon final

She was the better player in the first set and played some excellent tennis, she lost the first set because she panicked when she was serving for the set. Probably she panicked in part because she lacks confidence and she lacks confidence because it's been so long since she won a match and that is because of her schedule. Also banking everything on one miracle run that will change everything off of a WC just puts that much more pressure on every match she plays and that is the last thing she needs right now.
She surely understands though that just waiting for WCs for big tournaments is not a good plan, but for whatever reason she seems to be sticking with it. I guess all we can hope for is that this miracle run happens at some point, at least if she keeps playing like she did at the start of the first set there is a chance.

I have no idea why she is scheduling like that. And sorry: MDO for this event is so far away from her reality right now. I would understand that maybe if she would have a reasonable back up plan. But there is none we know of.

and after Dothan she is on the list for the W80 in Charlottesville but again as MDO and again without any chance to make it into the MD without WC
So she is obviously not willed to play Q at an ITF tournament or to play a 25k tournament (a 25k in Florida would be in the same week also), that's a shame as I really think that she needs more matches and obviously easier to get those at a lower level instead of playing bigger tournaments + she won't be able to play for a few weeks again after Bogota if she does not receive a WC somewhere but oh well, we could discuss about that forever, just should just get used to it.

So Bogota is next week already, so two tournaments in a row this time at least although the conditions in Bogota are tricky obviously, so not sure how Sabine will handle that and there are no walking byes in Bogota as well, I wish her the best anyway but at this point only wins will help her in her current situation....

Yeah I also don’t really understand the MDO at the 80K ITFs, although she’s also way off for a Q entry for Charlottesville.. But in her defense of not playing 25K ITFs..with the stupid ITF ranking system she wouldn’t even make the Q cut off for most tournaments, although for the Osprey 25K ITF in the same week she would just barely have made the cut.

It’s indeed an issue we’ve discussed already for so long and we’ll just have to accept it, but it’s just so damn frustrating. We all see that she needs matches..I assume she knows that too or is she really that thick?! Anyways..WCs are not unlimited and if she cannot get her ranking up before they run dry..she has no other choice..

yeah but the final withdrawal deadline for Osprey (and all other ITFs in the same week) is next Tuesday, so many players will still withdraw, look at how many players registered there with Priority 3-6, many of them will withdraw but for the 80k in Charlottesville most players ahead of her on the EL are there with Prio 1 or 2, so I don't expect many withdrawals there (at least not that many that she will make the MD, that's not possible)

I do agree with you! But as said, Osprey is an exception that she would’ve made the cut. But I was speaking more in general, even if she would be willing to play 25K ITFs, the new system is not in her advantage at all.

I just wanted to point out that right now players can be on several Entry Lists of tournaments in the same week and that they can withdraw from them until next Tuesday, so right now Sabine would be 26th on the Q-List of Osprey but after the withdrawal deadline she would be much higher on the EL, a ranking of 299 is always high enough to make it into the Q of a 25k tournament, in most cases you end up in MD even with a ranking around 300 also....
Lets check again the EL of Osprey next Thursday then u can see where she would have ended up with her current ranking!

TBH if Sabine keeps making dumb decisions (there's no other way to call them), there is little reason to defend her :help:

Aren't WC limited to six a year? With Bogota and Karlsruhe, she would already have used 5 for WTA MD and Q.

Honestly for her development it would be better if WC's would run out soon. The she has the choice between retiring or going down to smaller ITF's. Both options are better than the mess of a schedule she is playing right now.

I actually made a thread on this very recently in GM with precisely those two choices. I think it came across a little bit too aggressively though because I really wished that she just starts seeing the truth rather than deluding herself, but I'm just very pessimistic in general. Next week despite the difficult conditions actually might be a good thing because she will finally play matches two weeks in a row again.

I agree. And I really hope for a good draw for her (especially also concerning game style, I guess Sorribes-Tormo would be her worst night mare in her situation) that she has at least more than one match. Not just for the points but also for practice and self confidence.
