Victoria Azarenka, then-world No. 1 and top-seeded, lost to No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round. It wasn't so much that Vika lost; after all, the mighty mite Cibulkova came within a hair's breath of scoring the big upset over Azarenka back in March, at the Miami combined event. It was more the poor sportsmanship and sour, negative attitude that sometimes still seems to grip Azarenka when things don't go her way.

Azarenka smashed one racquet during the match (incurring a warning from the chair umpire), and when a reporter, trying to be discreet, asked what she would do to "recover" from the loss, the Australian Open champ went sarcastic: "I'm going to kill myself. . ." She added, "The tournament is over for me. What's to recover from?"

Actually, that final rhetorical question is pretty funny—but it doesn't make up for the fact that Azarenka just isn't behaving like a champion. End of story.
I would agree with Pete...... All this "next week will be more important tournament(than this)" and "I'm going to kill myself" is far from appropriate bahaviour

Yes I agree. I think the "what's there to recover from?" line is good, showing her state of mind/attitude/personality but the gonna kill myself part is very disturbing. I'm glad she's not #1 anymore and hopefully if/when she'll get that spot again in the future she'll have had some serious PR training.

And Peter Bodo doesn't behave like a responsible journalist. Pot, meet Kettle.

Goran Ivanisevic said the same after he lost at Wimbledon one year. It's no big deal. It's just a way of saying that she's disappointed with her performance.

This.

She's a bitch. That's no secret.
And this. It's almost like Vika being bitchy after a loss is a new thing, sure she's matured a bit over the years but her personality isn't going to change from being a snarky bitch to being Saint Kim.
Even Bodo used the adjective sarcastic about her "I'm going to kill myself" which exactly what she was doing. It's just a tennis match, it's not the end of the world and she only has herself to blame for playing like crap. I prefer her being who she is rather than saying the stock answers over and over again.

Basically, she's putting to much pressure on herself. She had a very, very good run winning all those tournaments and fighting from being down and out in some of her matches and coming through like a champion that is a no. 1. BUT when she lost, she started judging herself thinking that a no.1 shouldn't be losing, but getting to at least the semi-finals and it got to her, pissed her off and made her feel not worthy of the no.1 position. It's all to do with BELIEF! Basically, she was thinking that a no.1 should be perfect and never lose, hence her bratty/immature side came out.

JMO

As much as I don't like Caroline's game, I must admit that I think she handled the pressure of being a no.1 very, very well. I'm sure it's a hell of a lot of pressure being a no.1 with so many expectations on you. I think she carried it out with style to tell you the truth and as much as I hate to say it, I think Pova will do the same. Victoria doesn't believe in herself as much as Caroline and Maria do and that's why I think Vika didn't handle the whole losing/press conference with class. I feel Petra doesn't believe in herself as much as she should and that's why she didn't get to no.1. If she believed in herself as much as Maria does and Caroline did, then I think she'd be no.1 now.

Maria has a lot of experience to believe in herself; Caroline obviously has complete belief in herself, but I feel Vika and Petra don't have as much believe in themselves than the other two; albeit maybe for different reasons.

NashaMasha and her stupid bashing threads

You won't ever see her making a similar about Pova even though Pova often behaves just as "poorly" as Azarenka or even worse. :tape:

Maria has behaved worse than Vuvurenka ? Really, when ? When she's been gracious as hell to her during AO or IW ? --'

Well, he was depressed, disappointed and they asked him if he was gonna cheer for Croatian football team. He wanted to say that he was devastated and that he really doesn't care about football (IIRC, of course). As for Azarenka, I can't tell if she was cynical here or what.

Wow! Who knew that there was a set of defined behaviour that champions adhered to. Sad that there are still people who treat what they like as if it's anything more than that.

A TF thread can't ever be successful without someone bringing up a player who has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

The only thing that bothers me is her cocky attitude and the whole finger thing. That's just tacky as hell.

Nadal uses more gamesmanship than everyone else but is still labelled as a perfect gentlemen.
He bends the rue because he knows he can. That's not very humble or champion-like.
