Well, three major awards of the season.

Best player, best newcomer, and most improved player.

1. Best player

The way it stands now, if Capriati wins yearend Championships , she has an edge. Otherwise, I don't see how her current 3 titles of this year can compete with Venus's list of trophies. So by this moment, it is Venus.

2. Best newcomer.
I don't know the exact eligibility, but lets assume it is never being in Top 100.

It is probably between Hantuchova, Krasnoroutskaya and Mandula. I think it is Lina.

3. Most improved player.

Plenty of candidates here. But I think that realistically, it is either Henin or Capriarti. Dokic and Clijsters improved greatly too, but their rankings indicated it already in last year
and they finished last yearanked pretty high.
My voice would go to Henin.

DITTO!!!!!!

I agree with all three of your choices.

1. Venus .... best player of the year , results and win/loss % say it all.

2- Lina is best newcomer of the year , from outside top 100 and getting up to around 35 mark plus QF and 4R in back to back slams unseeded.

3- Most improved ..... well its Justine , she was ranked lower than all that have been mentioned and as well as that she got to Wimbledon final as well as SF in Paris.

Monica Seles for most improved? That would be nice.

But, I can see Henin or Clijsters getting it, or maybe Dokic.

I agree with the first 2 choices. But the third choice, I think it'll go to Capriati. I mean with her story and everything, the WTA will most likely give it to her.

1 best would probably be venus but if Capriati will end the year at no1 they'll give it to her
2 probably Lina
3 capriati, especially if they don't give her the Player of the Year award. henin and clijsters have a better chance of getting it than dokic in my opinion as they were Grand Slam finalists

For Improved Player I only see four possible choices: Capriati, Henin, Shaughnessy and Silvia Farina Elia.

Capriati might squeak by with Player of the Year. Not sure if she would pick up 'improved player.' Didn't she win 'comeback player' the other year?

I'm not so sure about Henin's chances. I don't know if her success this year is as much an improvement as opposed to her managing to stay relatively healthy. Would be nice if she got it particularly after that ballot brouhaha in 1999.

Shaughnessy roared up the rankings too, but she was no.38 while Henin started as 45 so that makes her look less impressive.

But Farina Elia was way out there (in the 60s or something, I think). If Silvia Farina Elia is indeed going to retire soon I think they may vote for her.

Don't forget, the tennis media vote on these awards. So a lot of it isn't so much what they've done, but what they've done when the tennis media is paying attention.

Player of the Year: I agree with the others- Venus will get this, unless Jen wins the year-end Championships. (She'll probably need to do it with Venus in the field to get full recognition.)

Best newcomer- probably will go to Bedanova, because she upset Seles to reach the USO quarters. She's not exactly a newcomer, but most of the tennis media probably weren't very aware of her before then.

Most improved- Capriati will get this. She has been the biggest story in tennis this year, and they'll want to give her something. If she doesn't get POTY, she's almost a lock for this.

Comeback player- Has to be Maggie Maleeva. Farina would be a good candidate too, but doesn't have the name recognition Maggie does. And Maggie is a former top 5 player, so she has somewhere to come back to.

I think they'll give the "best player" award to capriati for the comeback story alone. Nothing big about venus except how dominating she's been in the second half of the year. I'd like to see Venus win it for the second straight year, but my gut says it'll be capriati

if Venus gets the player of the year award, Jen will without a question get the award for the most improved player.
I can't imagine they wouldn't give a new world's number one a trophy at the end-of-the-year-awards.

Verve - re: your comment about not giving the award to the world no.1...

I might be remembering things incorrectly but I think they actually left Martina Hingis off the ballot in 1999. She wasn't even an option.

They seriously f*cked up the ballot in 1999, IMHO.

The worst part was the "Newcomer of the Year" fiasco where they originally listed three players (Clijsters, Dokic, Henin) then sent a correction knocking one of those players off (Henin) and replacing her with another (A. Stevenson). Then they resent a ballot but with 6 names on it (plus K. Srebotnik and I think A. Myskina)!

Sometimes you wonder how the WTA could get anything right.

is it possible for hingis/kournikova to get the doubles award again...
i mean we are talkin botu kournikova...who still gets a load of attention despite not playin...and gettin to the highest ranking in her career when she was sitting out
and hingis..who just lost her ranking...and imo...they do split to awards to the top players a bit....betcha they just gonna give hingis the same cheesy award they gave her last year

Oops, my bad. Of course, knowing the tennis press, they may very well vote for her again. Or pick Harkleroad.

With Daja out of the mix, newcomer will probably go to Lina. Not only did she have a breakthrough, but she has a name recognition of sorts; the Americans have a tough time with her name. She's gotten as much attention for that as for her tennis.

The big question is, which award will they screw up? Last year they badly botched two of them: doubles team of the year and comeback player.

Here's a question: suppose Venus doesn't play any more this year? Will that lock up POTY for Jen, as she will almost certainly finish at #1? Or will they take the view that Jen only got it because Venus didn't play?

Last year's awards:

Player of the Year: Venus Williams
Doubles Team of the Year: Venus Williams and Serena Williams
Most Improved Player: Elena Dementieva
Comeback Player of the Year: Iva Majoli
Newcomer of the Year: Daja Bedanova
Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award: Kim Clijsters
Player Service Award: Nicole Pratt

For this year, I'd give Venus the best player, though I won't have a problem if they give it to Capriati, which they probably will. Raymond/Stubbs for the doubles, Krasnoroutskaya for most newcomer, and I'd actually give the best comeback to Capriati. Most improved is a tough one, I like Elia and apologies to Henin fans, but I'd give it to Shaughnessy.
