Mattek-Sands has written on social media that she's struggling with a wrist injury and won't play. I wonder who Krawczyk will play with then?

She did team up with McHale at the last minute in the Melbourne 250. I'm guessing she's an option and she's been a solid doubles player in the past.

But the list of notable doubles absentees is almost as long as the singles list (Mattek-Sands, Vesnina, Chan, Hsieh, Schuurs, Stefani, Babos...) Some really meagre teams are going to be seeded this year.

And aside from Niculescu, what's up with Olaru? I don't think she's played any warm-up events either.

She said in December she will try to find another partner for this week (because Friedsam was in AO Q), but she must have changed her mind. She doesn't play too many tournaments, as others around her ranking do. No surprise here.

Looking back through her activity she has played two tournaments every year since becoming a doubles specialist. It's weird.

Given how depleted the field is, this would be the perfect chance for someone like Dabrowski to snag a Grand Slam. But she's gone 0-2 with Olmos, including a one-sided loss to Danilina/Haddad Maia, so that doesn't look likely.

Last year she played one. This year she intented to play (maximum) one as well.

Anyways, what I wrote above is overall, not Australia-wise, cause she competes in (significantly) less tournaments than the doubles specialists around her. For me, that's the weird part.

Hmm. Well, Australia is a long way to travel for potentially just one match. Hopefully it won't backfire for her.

Krejcikova/Siniakova should take the title with this field.

I hope not. Dabrowski is already way over ranked. I remember that Wimbledon final between Dabrowski/Xu and Hsieh/Strycova. Dabrowski single handed gave the match to the other side with all those down the net, way over the baseline and baseball shots.

I may be wrong here, but I think it was this match where at some point in the second set Dabrowski had missed like all of her backhand returns in the entire match.

What Alt Pairs are now in???
Players can re-pair until the draw is made, as long as their combined ranking is better than 159.

Krawczyk will need to find another partner, if she hasn't yet.

Sherif as well, unless she accepted Piter.

etc.

Well, at least $12.500 (AUD - before taxes) and 10 points are guaranteed. The rest shall remain to be seen.

What about Danilina? She is in the final in Sydney, but she couldn't find a pair for direct entry. I don't know the alt list. Maybe Sheriff could be a fairly good partner.

She wasn't on the Alt list, which consisted of 25 teams, but she could get lucky if someone (from Top 83) who needed to find a new partner picked her or does it until 12pm on Sunday, local time, when the draw will take place.

There is no repairing. Looks like they've already been filled by ALT teams. Only wildcards are left.

Good Chances of Mirza/Kichenok to be seeded in the draw considering Niculescu/Chan, mattek sands absence
