Another bright spot...Svetlana Kuznetsova!
Not only did she get a wildcard for the qualifying tournament, she won her 3 matches (thrashing her first 2 opponents) and also won her first round in the MD! A great effort for a 16 year old rookie ranked just inside the top 300! As a result her ranking has bulletted into the top 200...I think its like 180 or something from memory.

She ran into the Iroda brick wall and was simply overpowered in Round 2, but she did enough to earn my attention and interest!

She had quite a heavy load...playing juniors (losing QF in singles and the doubles final)...Im sure she will continue to have greater success this year, even tho she is limited to the tournaments she can play.

Janie, you forgot about Safin, too. He saved the men's draw from being totally ignored.

Oh well, this is a WTA forum. And, I am not particularly a fan of the Russian men, whiny Safin and grumpy Kafelnikov! :p

Janie, Safin is entertaining, charming and funny! What have you been watching?

He always looks like he's in pain. That's a part of his charm.

I was thinking the same thing, ys. But I would love to see him hire a real coach. Like a Chesnokov or Slozil. I don't think he will ever fulfill his great potential.

Chesnokov would be good, but I thought Gilbert is now available..

So unless both Safin and Dementieva hire proper full time coaches neither of them will fulfill thier true potential!!
So very sad
