The singles competition at OG always ends up, unfortunately, as pretty much just another stop on the circuit. It's the doubles (and also the MXD) that really captures the Olympic spirit and energy. As a Federer fan I am thrilled that he won a doubles gold, it would be nice to add the singles but not necessary. The Williams sisters two doubles golds are also a great achievement, super respect for that, even though I am not a fan of them...

By that same token you can say the doubles is a weaker than normal doubles draw as the teams have to be from the same country.

Anyway, I believe they are equally important. A gold medal is a gold medal. They mean the same in the medals table.

So you would trade a 100m sprint gold for an archery gold?

It's the only tournament where the end result is exactly the same for all three events i.e. a gold medal. So yes I agree that in a way the singles is somewhat diminished.
Yeah, I agree, they're all equal in the sense that the prize is exactly the same (although the prestige of a singles gold may still be higher). A good thing IMO, doubles is seriously undervalued on the tour and at the slams.

Well in the same sport. Obviously 100m sprint is the highest profile event in the whole of the Olympics.

But with tennis I really don't see any difference between a singles, doubles or now mixed gold medal. It's the only time in tennis when all events mean the same imo.

I think it's great that the status difference is reduced at the Olympics, but I do think it's a bit dubious to suggest that there is no difference at all. If you gave players a choice between a gold in singles, doubles and mixed I doubt there would be one in a hundred who would choose doubles or mixed.

That doesn't change the fact that a doubles gold is a big deal as well. For example, I have the distinct impression that Fed's gold with Warwrinka is one of his all-time proudest achievements.

I only care about tennis and badminton at Olympic Games and all 10 gold medals are pretty much equal to me. I'd never trade any of those medals for some steroid-bred mutant discipline medal.

And yes, I value an archery medal more than any running medal. :)

Dear OP, your opinion is cute, gurl, but don't expect a lot of people to share it (except other Fedtards). If Federer wins the singles gold, we can expect you and his others tards to switch from downplaying the value of a gold medal in singles to exaggerating the importance of how LEGENDARY and UNPARALLELED Federer's gold medal is.

I don't agree, I really don't care about doubles at all..it's always a sideshow to the singles competition.
That's fine for you. But I suspect (though I can't prove it) that more people in the world play doubles than singles.
