Figured I'd start a new thread as women's qualification begins today. Only a handful of relevant people have gone. USA starts soon. As per usual, qualification is probably the most compelling part of the competition because of 2 per country USA drama. If Simone isn't on for beam, there's a decent chance she gets 2 per countried which would just be WEIRD.

Standings as of now:

Re: 2018 Gymnastics Worlds

LOL @ Morgan having one of the best international scores of the quad and it STILL being 4.5 points behind Simone. I thought the qualifying would be interesting but Riley McClusker was a disaster. Almost all her scores got dropped for team, her score BARELY hung on to count for bars (her best event). Cannot believe she won't make the bars finals. She is so getting backballed from future teams.

Curious to see how Simone's bar score sits after Russia/China. She's currently in 2nd and had 2 wobbles.

Re: 2018 Gymnastics Worlds

@swim4life107, i had a feeling you were going to make this thread, thanks!! :p

simone got cheng + 1/2 named after her. i also know she has a wieler kip 1/1 but probably isn't competition ready. she can probably get the TTY named after her too.

i do wish we that USA/Simone had some more competition though, i feel the TF/AA can be a bit boring since the battles are always for silver/bronze. but simone deserves a lot of credit, i just rewatched her 2013 AA performance and her bars improvement is crazy. and at the end of 2015 her cheng was a mess in the practice videos, her 1/2 block is soooo good now, it's crazy.

i still kinda hate her beam besides the dismount, but she has this quad locked up

excited to see mustafina tmrw. her floor in the PT looked better than rio

also Liang Chow (Douglas / Johnson old coach) is new national head for team China. hopefully he can bring some better physical conditioning for these girls, they all look like they are about to fall apart at any given moment :help:

also, i like kara's beam, but those ring jumps are just atrocious. so glad she is getting appropriately nailed for them

Yeah, I was thinking the same how the AA field is weaker compared to previous years for Simone. Not that it takes anything away from her.

Simone Vile. :help: Real Worlds for Gymnastics was in Sofia.
Translation: Simone isn't a dainty little white girl with translucent skin.

I think it'll all change in a post-Simone world. I think the USA's AA streak is a bit misleading. Aside from Simone, none of the other World/Olympic champions were forgone (apart from Beijing...where we knew it would be one of Shawn/Nastia, just didn't know which one). 2011/2012/2017 were all super close and compelling finals. Carly was the underdog against The Evil One going into Athens, etc. I think I read that if Simone were replaced with Ragdoll, Team USA's lead over Japan would go from 12 to 6 points (and there will be teams that get closer to USA than Japan).

Simone has gotten considerably better each year. I thought she was amazing in 2015 Glasgow, and she was miles better in Rio. The gap between Rio and now is even bigger. I cannot even imagine the possibilities for where she'll be in Tokyo. She might have a 6.5 D on bars by then. I don't love her beam either but I blame the code more than anything else. That style has a lot of upside if done right (see Shawn's 2008 beam routine).

I'm excited for Mustafina too. I'm also hoping we get another epic hot mess from Melnikova. Wish we got Yilin on bars but apparently she's sitting out because of that stupid individual nominative rule (alas Jade Carey). I'm excited for China as I haven't seen most of the new girls. Appears that the Rio quad girls are all done (comeback Shang plzzzz :( ) Dos Santos from France is another one of my random faves. She has upside in the AA and I'm hoping it comes together this year.

:help: You're the one obsessed with skin colour as you're the one who called Zhenya a porcelain doll. FYI, I love Vanessa James and she's none of that. :help:

My problem with Viles is the new judging system benefits her but she has none of the grace and elegance that great gymnasts from the past had. And she's another tiring American sportsperson turned SJW like her opinion matters more than others.

Ahh...I was waiting for the esoteric but dog whistle words. Didn't have to look far to find them.

....and there you go with the coded dog whistling. That language in this sport has always been code for "white and dainty." But what am I talking about? You have one black fave and probably had a black friend in 2nd grade, so clearly you can't be racist.

Oh and for the record, Simone regularly scores the highest in execution. So she'd be winning regardless of how you try to spin it. The old system would just guarantee she'd be winning with downgrades and watered down routines. But I don't see you complaining about how the scoring system in figure skating helps your faves out. Can't have it both ways.

It's not a new trend but it's still strange to see the complete absence (in any meaningful way, anyway) of Romanian gymnasts.

Women's AG Team Final is about to begin - if you're in Canada, CBC is streaming!

Good luck USA, Russia, and Canada <3

In an ideal world, Canada would break through for a bronze medal. It's a big ask but we never know with WAG

Re: 2018 Gymnastics Worlds

Sam is out here milking every last tenth he can find to make the podium and he could still JUST miss the medals. Shades of the Rio HB final. Although, Oleg gave him massive breathing room with that epic choke on HB. Lord please, let my broke ass man win just ONE world medal, please!

There are so many cute bois in this meet, I can't take it!

Re: 2018 Gymnastics Worlds

That was the most Sam Mikulak thing of all things. Hits 5 for 5, has the meet of his life, basically has a guaranteed medal heading into one of his strongest events (maybe even an outside shot of a gold if he hits the routine of his life) and boom.......epic choke. What a bum. Still cute though.

Re: 2018 Gymnastics Worlds

Nice moment for Liu TingTing winning the gold and Anne-Marie Padurariu the silver on beam. Good on Simone for winning bronze, but she really hasn't been herself this competition - I read she was suffering from a kidney stone? She wobbled all over the place but managed to stay on the beam.

It was a shock to see Eaker and Wevers fall off the beam, given that they were sure shots to win a medal.
