Elena Dementieva cameback from the brink of defeat versus Henin-Hardenne, on Friday, to keep her hopes of capturing a second Tier I title alive in as many contested this season.
Justine Henin entered the match in full steam racing to a 4-1 lead claiming the key points en route to a 45 minute first set that ended 6-2.
In the second the match was more of the same with Dementieva not being able to dictate play from the baseline and the Belgian forcing Elena to continuous errors. But as the match wore on until 5-2 Henin-Hardenne served for the match. She was two points away from a lunch and a shower before Dementieva broke her. The Russian followed that with holding serve to put the pressure on Henin’s side as she was to serve again at 5-4 up. But once again Henin-Hardenne collapsed under the heavy balls coming from Dementieva, who at this point was already into her intense rhythm of play from the baseline, to level things up at 5 games all. From there on Dementieva claimed the second set 7-5.
The last set started with four consecutive breaks of serves before Dementieva finally held to lead 3-2.Until 5-4 everybody held and at this stage Elena Dementieva had her first match-point. Justine however showed why she has saved so many match-points in the past as she conquered an exhausting rally to neutralize Dementieva’s match-point. Eventually the Belgian levelled play at 5 all. But Dementieva was now in control and held serve once again and forced Henin to serve to stay in the match. Justine wasn't able to maintain her level of play and dropped the match with a backhand mistake for her 70th unforced error of the match. Final score: 2-6; 7-5; 7-5.
Overjoyed, Dementieva dropped to her knees with an incredulous smile o her face.
For Justine it was only her second defeat of the year, but a painful one. Next up for the Russian blonde will be Maria Sharapova, who beat Martina Hingis in the first semi-final of the day scoring a 6-3; 6-3 victory over the former world number one.
In the head-to-head Sharapova leads Dementieva 3-1 claiming the last encounter in three sets in Zurich 2004.
