Mary Pierce, who wrote off much of the 2001 season with injuries, has signed on with Octagon. Less than a year after her magical run to the French Open singles and doubles titles, Pierce pulled a vanishing act from the Grand Slam stage. The 2000 French Open champion missed much of the 2001season while suffering from chronic inflammation of her lower spine.
Today, Pierce announced she has signed a management agreement with Octagon and plans a return to tennis.The 26-year-old Pierce pronounced herself fully fit and eager to resume a full playing schedule in 2002. <br />"As a result of a lot of hard work to get into top playing shape, I feel stronger and better than ever," said Pierce, whose injury caused her to sit out Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. "It's never easy stopping what you love due to injury and the past months have certainly been challenging for me. The good thing is that all the right ingredients are now there for a great 2002. I'm happy with my game and happy to go into this next phase with Octagon who possesses the experience and dedication that match my own."
The 1995 Australian Open champion owns 15 singles titles and nine doubles titles in her career. She has finished in the top 10 in six of the last eight years, including three top-five rankings.
"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to represent Mary, a highly respected champion," said Octagon Vice President Micky Lawler. "Her well earned prestige lies not only in her Grand Slam titles but also in her perseverance and style as a true ambassador of women's professional sports around the world."
Currently ranked No. 131, Pierce joins Elena Dementieva, Martina Hingis, Lleyton Hewitt, Anna Kournikova, Richard Krajicek, Gustavo Kuerten, Todd Martin, Amelie Mauresmo, Mark Philippoussis and Sandrine Testud among Octagon's roster of tennis clients.
